Regional Inn Suggestions

08 April 2022 - 01:36 PM

Hi, I heard on the discord that the Inns are now going to use units based on Region, one good and one evil.

I have made this topic to serve as a platform for my own and other people's suggestions.

Suggestions:

Gondor

Good: A unit from Dol Amroth or some other Fiefdom that is referred to in lore.

Evil: Perhaps some kind treasonous Gondorian unit? Perhaps with some reference to the Kin-strife?

In the same sense that Denethor fell into madness because he felt the war was unwinnable, some men of Gondor might join Sauron out of conviction that his side will win

Design-wise I am thinking perhaps take inspiration from the men in the movies who helped Denethor put Faramir on the pyre.

Harad

Good: Some kind of anti-Sauron rebellion unit. Either entirely new, or a slightly re-coloured mash-up of some of the other units of Harad itself.

For combat I am thinking higher damage to monsters and heroes, to signal that their beef is primarily with the servants of Sauron, not those under their control.

Evil: To mirror the rebels, I would add a Morgoth-related faction. Some kind of specialized fanatics. Call them something like 'Zigur Loyalists/Priestesses' or something similar.

The fact that these folk would be willing to fight with whatever Evil faction would require them to be deep in Morgoth cool-aid.

This way you can add one more human unit that is fully devoted to Morgoth & Sauron for the people who like that sort of thing without further expanding the evil in the Harad faction itself. Design-wise I am thinking similar to the Zigur cultists, perhaps with a slight difference in colour pallet, purple instead of red, for example. Perhaps you could also differentiate these by making them a female unit. Like an dark sorority or sisterhood or something. That would make them a bit more distinct from the other Zigur worshipers.

Combat-wise, to differentiate them I would make them a support unit with active & passive buff spells for ally units, to signal they're there as support for servants of Sauron, not to be at the vanguard of their allies' troops. If you want to go really hard, you could perhaps have them carry a particular Morgoth-related object that is the source of their power. This could be a banner, a totem, or even a processional statue/relic carrier, if you want to go really visually unique.

Rhun

Good: The Kinn-lai Warriors or Dorwinion Legionnaires (depending on what region Dorwinion belongs to)

Evil: Some old or new Easterling unit. Perhaps you could play on the fact that Rhun has many other units fighting for Mordor and occasionally Harad.

Have these units be more of the defensive sort, guarding the homeland while the other warriors go fight for their allies.

Rhovanion

Good: The Kinn-Lai warriors or some unit related to Green Wood.

Evil: Some Dol Guldur related unit, perhaps a corrupted version of a unit from Green Wood that is not part of the DG faction itself. Perhaps to differentiate from the other DG units, these could be corrupted differently. Perhaps you could focus on the theme of madness rather than magic. Combat-wise, I would let them be high damage low defence units, to signal their lack of inhibition.

Erebor

Good: Either Dorwinion Legionnaires (is Dorwinion not a part of Rhun) or a drarven unit

Evil: a scavenger or gold-seeker unit that has entirely given in to greed and desires to obtain Erebor's treasures for themselves, whatever the price. Design-wise, I think a mixed battalion of men and dwarves, wearing mixed forms of armor, to indicate their hoarding nature. For combat, it would make sense for them to be a siege unit. Perhaps with some abilities to drain or temporarily turn resourse buildings to indicate that theme of greed

Mordor

Good: Slave Insurgents or Freed Slaves from Nurn

You could have them look something like this: https://media.moddb....lave_Render.png

Perhaps you could have them also wear rags + sickles and cleavers for weaponry. For their armour update, they could have some Orcish armour, to indicate they are taking what they can from their defeated enemies. For combat, I am thinking a fast, high damage sword unit, but with low defence, like the Mahud. To indicate they are hardened by their resistance to Mordor.

Evil: To mirror the rebellious slaves, you could build on the design of the Mouth of Sauron to make some Barad-Dur Leutenant Unit, fully corrupted, no humanity left. I am thinking a more defensive unit, to indicate they are the last line to defend Barad-dur

Misty mountains

Good: A dwarven unit makes the most sense. Perhaps something to do with Moria, and the dwarves who fought to reclaim it.

Evil: Some goblin-related unit makes the most sense. Moria Screechers perhaps, or a creature we have not seen before.

Arnor:

Good: Some old or new Dunedain-related unit seems to be the most logical.

Evil: Perhaps an Angmar-descended unit, like the kindred of the men who fought for the Witch-King against Arnor. However, I believe that no hillmen where left in the time of the War of the Ring. So, perhaps an orcish or undead remnant of Angmar or Arnor would fit better with the lore.

Eriador:

Good: A unit related to elves, men or hobbits would make sense. Perhaps, the elven Exiles from the campaign.

Evil: Perhaps a unit of those Ruffians Saruman sent to the Shire. Design-wise these could be very similar to the Wild Men Isengard already has.

Lindon

Good: Ered Luin Traders

Evil: Not sure, since we're close to the sea, perhaps some pirate unit, particularly interested in trying to prevent Elves from sailing to the West or something.

Rohan

Good: Some kind of Rohirim, either new or old. Or perhaps a unit from Lorien, since it is close.

Evil: Some kind of Dunlanding or a unit made up of Grima's henchmen

If you're wondering why there's some many units around the theme of corruption, well, geographically I think it is often more appropriate than adding an external evil unit not native to the region. Plus, there's the notion that Sauron has a long history of using manipulation to get what he wants. I feel like adding corrupted units as inn units shows that he still has the ability to stir people up to fight for him, even if they themselves might feel that they have their own motivations. I think it adds a bit more diversity and depth to the world of aotr (which already has an amazing level of depth tbh).

Let me know what you think!
