Thud, Arkhan: ? about if you would do AI for Gears of War.

30 November 2007 - 11:38 AM

I appologize if this forum is only supposed to involve threads about DOW-- if you guys need to move my thread or whatever, go right ahead. I know that you guys read this page regularly, so I thought I'd post. Thud, Arkhan, and whoever else works with you for AI projects are EXTREMELY talented. Your AI mod for DOW is beyond spectacular and will keep that game on my hard drive forever, thank you for your hard work. Regarding Gears of War for the PC, is there ANY chance you'd consider doing an AI mod for the multiplayer portion of it? Are you at all familiar with GOW PC? It's a 3rd person action/shooter made by EPIC games and it uses the Unreal 3 engine. It's VERY mod friendly and comes with it's own editor/tools. It was released just this month.

Problem is, the initial release was VERY buggy and was filled with gamebreaking crashes. Also, GOW PC utilizes "games for windows," a system which has also contributed to many people not bothering with multiplayer I'm sure. I'm among some of the fortunate people that can run it no problem, but in order to do so, I had to download the latest nvidia BETA driver-- nothing else seemed to work. I don't know if the first patch addressed that though. As a result of all these shenanigans, I'm unsure if the multiplayer component will ever take off like the 360 version did. See, when it's working and maxed out, it's one of the best playing AND looking games I've ever experienced. The campaign is awesome and with the added levels for the PC ver, it's pretty long for a shooter. The multiplayer is superb as well, but I think EPIC kinda dug their own grave with it you know?

There are no bots at all for the multiplayer-- you can only play with humans. Is there any chance in hell you guys would consider making bots with AI to match for multiplayer? The only way an AI mod would work, seriously, is if it was VERY good and highly customizable. You'd need to be able to issue different orders to your bots and there'd probably have to be some kind of advanced decision making, much like DOW's AI mod. You'd have to be able to tell the AI when/how/when to go for what weapons, when to split up, rush, stay back, flank-- it would be hard I'm sure.

What do you think? Do you know anyone who would consider a project like this if you guys wouldn't?

Congrats guys, lag seems to be completely eradicated.

I haven't played with anything above 3 bots and myself yet, but I noticed a massive difference regarding your mod's framerate-- there was NO problems period for me. I always experienced lag when I used previous versions of this AI mod, but had no problems whatsever with it deactivated. Everything was perfect in this current installment however.

This was the first time I chose to download the modded camera and I'm not too sure I like it. I can always delete the camera luas like you said though.

Anyway, great job again Thud, Arkhan, and whoever else helped. Again, I haven't seen any framerate problems at all yet. BTW, I would never dream of using AI highspeed anyway-- I understand why it's there, but to me, that seems to just defeat the purpose of the mod. To each his own and again, great job.

Hey thudd, any news on updating your mod to coincide with the new patch?

Not trying to rush you or be a prick-- just curious. The new patch kinda threw a curveball at your mod since you released 2.0 not that long ago. Any estimate on when we can expect an update that incorporates all of the new changes from the patch into the AI?

Does the new patch kinda break the skirmish mod? Or no?

That is, until Thudd and Arkhan update it? For instance, one of the chenges in the new patch is that all stealth abilities must be researched instead of some of them coming standard. Since the AI hasn't been programmed for this and all the other changes, is the skirmish kinda screwed now? Or will the mod just play as if it hasn't been patched, IE, all the old rules are still in effect?

Question for Thudd or Arkhan... go easy on me.

What's up guys? I posted a bit not too long ago and dropped back in after a long hiatus. I want to download Skirmish 2.2 but have a stupid question, resulting from the fact that I've only been a PC gamer for less than a year. I looked at the FAQ too i swear.

There's nothing contained in the 2.2 download that will simply upgrade 2.1 to 2.2? In other words, I should probably just delete 2.1 and get 2.2? It's not a case of 2.1 turning into 2.2 after download?

I know, I'm pretty pathetic when it comes to this stuff right now. I'll learn lol. Thanks for your time.
