hmm, considering investing in a new pc. I've had this one for 5 years I believe. An excuse to try out win 10 as well I guess.

 

But I was wondering if I should try and order it now or wait until the next generation of graphic cards arrive? I've managed to discover that the next generation is on the way out, but they are still expensive.

 

I feel I'm woefully out of date on new hardware. I rarely read up until it's getting close to buying a new pc. Maybe there's some new cpus on the way out as well, or many other things.

 

So, I'm guessing this is a "What to buy" thread.

I was thinking the same thing for when I go away to Uni. I want a new PC, but with old enough drivers and shit so it's not too expensive. I mean the stuff that came out in like 2014 is MORE than enough for what I need, so is that stuff cheap?

The NVIDIA 1080 is the newest member of the PC elitist family that has no foreseeable obsolete turning point in its future.  It's smaller, better, AND cheaper than the NVIDIA Titan.  I'll be getting it here soon.

I doubt I'm going to spend $800 on a gfx card, at least not unless I expense it on my freelance company to get the 25% vat out of it. Ah yeah, the price ends up on $1000 around here for that Founders edition or whatever. 

 

I'll probably just buy a cheap 9xx something for now and upgrade in the winter or next year, when other models are saturating the market.

1070, i have heard is comparable in performance to the current top dog the 980 ti. I currently run a 980 ti. Tomorrow (May 26th) I believe the 1080 is released. June 10th or around then is when the 1070 will be released at a fraction of the price but will have comparable performance.

 

It terms of upgradability. What will your budget be and the currency you use? Perhaps we can build something for you.

Wait for next year. The 1080 is again focused on efficiency rather than performance and although it's better than a Titan X it's like the 980 vs 980ti. If you buy a 1080 you might regret it when the 1080ti comes and blows the 1080 away. I say wait and see.

At the very least wait and see what AMD's Polaris brings to the table.

Yeah, a 1070 might be better. Currently on a gtx 670 from 2012, and now the event I had in mind for having a fresh pc was postponed until august/september, so I've got better time to wait for the prices to deflate a bit.

 

Beyond that, CPUs? RAM? just go fer whatevs that fits the mobo? SSDs? what is going on in ssds these days?

Get an i5 6600k, a $150-200 motherboard that supports it, 16gb of DDR4, a Samsung 850 Evo 512gb or 1tb whichever fits your budget, and a corsair cx750 psu.

Though I still recommend standing by for a little while longer because every time a new processing node comes out the first chips are basically Guinea pigs to work out kinks and test the limits. So the next cards that are released will take full advantage of the power of pascal, but the 1070 and 1080 are not going to be all that for long.

Skylake gains are pretty minimal. Probably be fine with a Haswell-R mobo and CPU. I have a 4790K and it's pretty damn nice.

Gains are minimal yes but the price is still good on a 6600 and it will be rock solid for years. No reason not to recommend one.

Beginning to fill my cart with bits and pieces now.

 

- Thinking of a MSI gtx 1070 for the graphics. Popoular and acceptable price, imo.

 

- Also put a New monitor into my list: A Dell 27" LED G-Sync S2716DG, so we get that advantage of a g-sync monitor. And I like Dell Screens, have had a ultrasharp for 6-7 years at my office and no complaints from me there.

 

- For the cpu, thinking I'll just stick to the i5-6600K. Not too expensive,

 

- Pondering about the motherboard though. thinking MSI to keep it within a type. Would like to get me some water cooling for the cpu this time though, even though that's probably never going to buzz.

Added some more stuff:

 

- MSI z170A for motherboard, does higher bus speeds on the memory from what I can tell,

- 4x8gb Crucial DDR4 2666mghz RAM.

- Samsung 850 Evo for primary drive, two WD red 3TB for mirrored storage

- Win 10 in a physical copy, although I might just keep going w7 out of spite if there's no way to choke all the privacy sharing.

- Intel TS13x liquid cooling for the CPU

- A Fractal Design Define R5 black cabinet, with a corsair cx750w psu

 

Converted to USD, that's about $ 2900 of stuff. The screen costs a bit as well. Going to need to work some more freelance this fall to get enough income to pay for this.

For the CPU cooler do not go with an Intel one, instead get one of Corsair's H series

They are extremely popular, effective, rock solid in reliability, and come with Corsair's excellent customer support if any issues arise. So yeah, do one of those instead.

The rest is looking very nice! Props on the choice of a g-sync monitor and the Fractal Design R5, they're both fantastic in their differing ways.

Alright, switched out the water cooler and hope it fits the chassis and the motherboard. A pretty hefty price total, but split over 4-5 years it should be okay.

If you're going to use an h100i I can guarantee it will fit in a define r5 with a 6600k. Nothing to worry about with compatibility.
