Well, this is a balance initiative, to make melee squads more enticing. It is not a fix!
I fear for balance issues, it's a bit different from the unrealistic los of the weapons, which in that case they are limited while the melee charge proposed is a buff, or not?
Well, they will only engage enemies within (average) 12 meters, with a x1.25 increase in speed...
Will not have a MAJOR impact! Not to mention that we have made it so IN MANY mods.
AND it is so for some units in vanilla DoW. MOST Orks have it already!
By the way, from the conversation I read that melee on the move is not possible.

..is there any replacement/decent substitute for an effect of trampling? Melee damage by contact/proximity?
I have not tried to give melee weapons... Range (of 2)!! It may work (sight chances).
The only alternative would be to use the dance (leap) mechanic.
