Tropico publisher Kalypso acquires rights to classic stealth-tactics series Commandos!

New titles and also remasters are planned!

Was posted a couple of months ago already:

Let's just hope the new releases will be mod-friendly and most importantly, come with a relatively easy to use mission builder! :thumbsuphappy:

Has anyone heard any news or any development for the upcoming kalypso games yet? Seems they have been quiet since they first announced that they were making new commandos games

Their forum doesn't seem to be very active. Their mods aren't, in any case - the Commandos section contains a spam message about viagra, that was posted there on november 24th and it hasn't been deleted or edited yet. It gives me the vibe of a small developer, that produces game titles in series, not parallel to one another.

I kid you not, @pyjamasPojken. Here at Revora we're discussing that for few months. Where you been the whole time, driving the Kubelwagen around Burma?

Prolly I'm the one person only that checks Kalypso's channels more often than anyone else does. Nothing set on stone YET, announcing a studio is far from coming.

A slight chance here publishers executives will treat the franchise with respect to earn our... trust in a company known only for Tropico, given its a sim management game unlike what they signed up for - have they published a RTT game before? In an other turn of events, no competent studio be found and the return of the series takes the "mobile treatment". I'd take out that possibility, following the success on MiMiMi's ninja game, Shadow Tactics.

Look at the decision THQ made for fleshing out a completely new Desperados game, so did they hire Shadow Tactics team to do the job.

Coincindence?

Nada.

If I were a manager at Kalypso, I would wait until Desperados 3 is released. If it gets good reviews, I'd also hire Mimimi Productions to make a new Commandos.

As much as i like Mimimi, their engine is not mod-frienly and from what it seems Desperados 3 is being made on the same engine as Shadow Tactics. Also from D3 gameplay we can see that the mechanics are VERY simillar to ST, and i mean like they are almost the same with characters having almost the same skills... It almost feels like a reskin in a wild west. Maybe it was just an early build of the game and a lot will change, but still. I would prefer someone else do a Commandos game to have a healthy competition in the genre.

You make a good point, Felo, In spite of the general consensus, losing the major option to let users do what they want with their game in a given manner, so to prevent mods from being used online (when having a multiplayer/cooperative mode) as an anti-cheating measure, is crazy as it sounds. And that means letdown. Except coop might allow mods to carry your progress, much like others game achieved it already.

Depends on commitment, as usual. Were the new publisher to handle the work to a third-party studio, it should insist on doing the upcoming game(s)/remake(s) on an in-house engine using the 2.5D/3D isometric view.

Imho should a modern engine, Unity (one Shadow tactics uses, Felo, Mimimi used Unity engine!), Cryengine, Unreal, Gamebryo be used the disappointment will be of an unseen scale.

I am not a modder and am completely unfamiliar with engines, so my bad for giving messing up with whose engine it was :) However the point is still valid that whichever engine they used was not mod friendly.

I really hope a new commandos game will run on some moddable engine cause what you guys are doing with C2 despite having no official tools for that is really remarkable :) If there were any official tools for creating a new levels I can't even imagine what state this community would be in after almost 2 decades of modding. We would probably have hundreds of unique missions available.
