Repetitive question, isnt it?
Well, in order to do this, you have to get:
+ Tempest, the Quake III Gamepack for GMAX. Itll let you export GMAX models as .MD3.
+ 3D Exploration. It used to be freeware before (either that, or download.com had a pirate version on its server). Dont know now. But this will let you go from MD3 to 3DS or MAX. You can also convert textures in mass with it when converting models.
First thing to do is, load your GMAX file with Tempest installed. Go to File, Export, and choose Quake III. Thats the first step.
Now, open 3D Exploration, and find the MD3 file. Right click on it, select Convert ---> Geometry files... On Convert to select 3D Studio Mesh (3ds), then rest of options as desired. Click on Convert, and you have your little nice 3ds file.
You can get Tempest here: http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax
And 3D Exploration seems to be trial only now. Lucky me. But look around and youll eventually find it.

Never noticed you could. It isnt slower though, just one more click at most. As a pro, its contextual.

I know this is an old topic but...
All those interested in gmax should know that the company is no longer supporting it. There are few places to download it now, and no one is giving out the serial numbers for it. These numbers were time encoded so you won't be able to use old ones.
There are two alternatives:
(1) fork out a large amount of money and get 3ds max
(2) go to XSI website and get their free mod tools - with a few tricks and programs, you can get them to convert the files to more useful formats
Hope this helps

They extended the time it would be kept up - you can still download it. But you cannot register it to get the serial number - as these have dates incorperated itno them, they cannot be used again after roughly five days [this is why people cannot post up their old codes to help people with this free modeller]
Odd behavoir, but there you go. I went the route with getting 3ds max 7. What I make requires it.
People doing modding - I recomend xsi free mod tools - its just like their full product [unlike gmax which was a reduced old version of MAX v3/4]. It doesn't do the full range of file formats [e.g. 3ds, MAX, low etc] it does enable you to export to the games. I have used it before and I believe it is the best route for modders at the moment.
I hope this clarifies my previous post

You'll find that turbosquid took the gmax reigns and are still dishing out the activation keys and technical support for Gmax.
And as for getting a model from Gmax to 3DS, just use one of the Maxscript based W3D importers available to gmax. They usually work in 3DS Max too.
Gmax>W3D>3DS Max>whatever you want
