This morning, a classified letter originating from one of Atlantia's leading biotech firms, Simurex, was accidentally leaked when an email server malfunctioned. Government officials were not available for comment.

Background on Hydra

Name: Hydra Virus
Lab Description: P.74A-xxxx Viral Delivery System
Transmission Vector: Dormant bacterial transmission, particle activation upon entering a functioning metabolic system due to increased heat and a higher level of biological macromolecules, indicating a living organism.
Cause of Symptoms: Hydra is programmed to only attack living organisms based upon their individual genetic code, and thus can rightly be described as a genetic transmission vector. The result of massive reproduction of viral particles is an infection of surrounding somatic cells, which affects their ability to enter cell division and leaves them permanently in the G0 phase.
Symptoms: Symptoms develop after 3-4 days, and consist of blotching on the skin, an elevated fever, a bad cold, a cough, and internal bleeding. Later, slightly before death, massive hemorrhaging occurs. Death occurs within seven days, and is nearly 100% lethal except in the case of bad engineering.
Risk of Secondary Transmission: Minimal. Unless two subjects are genetically identical, each substrain of the virus is uniquely targeted to a specific individual by verifying a certain unique DNA polymorphism (RFLP) through the creation of restriction enzymes caused by the hijacking of the cell. As a result the virus infects every cell it comes in contact with, however in incompatible cells, the result is the formation of specially tailored restriction enzymes set to recognize a single RFLP and insert "junk" DNA which causes the secretion of excessive amounts of cyclin-dependent kinases, and specially sets up a lack of regulatory systems causing each cell to constantly produce mRNA of the correct type. The result is a flood of CDKs, and a complete arrest in cell division as the cell enters the G-0 cycle, a mitotic holding pattern. In non-targeted individuals, based on the properties of natural selection, the genes introduced by the virus will eventually be filtered out, as the virus will not be able to reproduce, unlike in the targeted individual, where one half of infected cells generally undergo the viral reproduction process.

THE HYDRA FILE

Obtained by a rogue intelligence agent who was working in one of the clandestine offices of the Intelligence Directorate in the Aesanian Union, this file made its way into the hands of an Atlantian foreign General, Freiherr von Wietersheim, eventually reaching the Aesanian president on 4 September 2006. It included the following information, and several photographs.

1. Intent and Creation
This report was compiled by Doctor Yves Vollard, MD of the Delbos Foundation for Medical Research and Treatment, for the Research Team on Emergent Foreign Diseases. This publication has been produced by a non-governmental organization which is in no way shape or form related to any sovereign power. The purpose of this document is unbiased third party research on potential major illnesses.

2. Preliminary Case Studies
As of 1 September 2006, only four cases have been successfully diagnosed before death. Six other cases, all in Aesania, have been documented postmortem. In all cases, death has taken place in the form of hemorrhaging, organ degradation, and massive system failure, culminating in cardiac arrest. The infection appears to be intransmittable by air or contact, and has proven to be 100% fatal. Based on third-party autopsies, we have concluded that the disease is caused by a virus which appears to aggressively attack all organs, leaving the brain mostly intact. Of some notice is the drastic decrease in erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, with plasma volume remaining stagnant and comprising the majority of the circulatory fluid. This evidence has led this commission to believe that the virus must be interfering with the blood flow mechanisms, causing catastrophic damage to blood vessels, causing internal bleeding and death, however this does not explain the prevalence of red spots on the victim's torso and abdomen before death.

3. Distribution and Spread
As of 1 September 2006, the virus appears to be limited to six cases in Aesania, two in Pythogria, and two in Yuktobania. This is the first appearance of this disease, thus leading us to believe that the virus could either have been produced by a massive evolutionary change in response to a rapidly changing host species, or may have been manufactured by a corporation.

In addition to the health bulletin put out to hospitals around the world, the file also included copies of the two leaked letters, and three pictures of the Applied Biological Systems Lab on the night of the raid, distinctly with the lights cut and a vast concentratioin of guards at the main door, and obviously inside the building, much more than would be proportionate.
