Edited by Vortigern: Emoticons are not punctuation. Six tongue-faces is far too many for a four-line post, so instead you get none.

If you're actually annoyed that a lot of modern rap is 'pop-rap', as you call it, I suggest you look into the underground hip-hop scene. There's some brilliant stuff out there. Easy-to-find recommendations: Jedi Mind Tricks, Sage Francis, Army of the Pharaohs, The Roots, Immortal Technique, Buck 65. And if you're unwilling to forgo your rock beginnings, look into The Flobots and Hollywood Undead, who are plenty of fun.
So yeah, actually addressing the question of the thread now that it's been raised once again, I think both modern metal and modern hip-hop are in good shape, as long as you look in the right places. And I actually really like Iron Maiden's new album. Suck it, traditionalists.

Anyway, I don't listen to rap anyway, but I don't really enjoy much of the rock/metal we have around today. Pendulum is what I've been listening to lately, and its somewhat rock-related. Seems that they are somewhat pop as well though, quite a few hits on them youtubes.

Anyway, yeah, Pendulum are pretty huge over here, Duke. Like, full-on sell-out tours every time big. Their big-ness is really pretty easy to guess at when you look at the guest appearances on their last album. Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree), In Flames and the guy from The Prodigy, all rather well-known themselves. (Man, four hyphens in one paragraph. Go me.) There's not really anything comparable to Pendulum, at least in terms of mainstream appeal. The closest would be Chase & Status, but personally I'm really not a fan. I can make some decent suggestions if you're into d'n'b, though. Calyx & Teebee, High Contrast, Caspa & Rusko (dubstep), Andy C, to name but a few. I'm sure there are others who can make a better job of inducting newcomers or casual listeners into the genre.
Neth: If you're more into rock than metal, I also have a few suggestions: as mentioned, Theory of a Deadman; VersaEmerge; I assume you're already familiar with the Foo Fighters (who isn't?); Queens of the Stone Age; Stone Temple Pilots; Alice In Chains; Alkaline Trio; and it seems to me that you might like Mayday Parade, The Maine, The Academy Is..., We The Kings (probably only their self-titled album, their second one was way more pop-y).
It also sounds like you should look to broaden your horizons a bit as well. I know one guy who has listened to more or less nothing except his favourite two Radiohead albums for the last ten years, and now he's a massive douche. Coincidence? You decide.

DnB on its own might become to bassy for me. I need there to be something to listen to multiple times without getting worn out. Thus you will notice the large amount of progressive stuff up there. Did try some technicaln metal as well, but I haven't found some that I've really enjoyed yet. They usually go deep into the sort of screaming I find annoying and very few calm phases. Between the buried and me and Textures are the ones I've really heard there.
Hehe, just had to post this one for the top quote: "How y'all doin'? This here's Between the Buried and Me. This is our video for 'Alasker'. Watch out, now. There's a feller in there. He's crazy as a sumbitch and he's writin' all over himself."
Neth needs more than slipknot. I can recommend going over to a bit of Avenged sevenfold(they are my little brother's kinda metal band, not a very big fan but eh, okay) and system of a down(mesmerize/hypnotize were popular a while back), then slowly creep over into some Dream-Theater or Pain of Salvation. But thats just me.
