Hi, Starcraft is a RTS game where you have to build structures and train units to attack your enemy just like RedAlert, Warcraft and Warhammer 40K Drak Crusade.
In Starcraft, there have 3 races, terran (human space marine  ), Protoss (warrior type's race where they are expert on usinr warpsword) and Zerg (the alien). :p

The game is fairly balanced, constant updates from Blizzard, even now for SC1! The support from Blizzard keeps it competitive and makes the community strong.

The tournaments and ladders usually offer cash prizes and because of companies paying certain players to play it's essential to become good and get to the top of the ladder and make a name for yourself. Arguably, this is only a small point, the main reason is the support given by Blizzard for so many years, we've seen it with WC3 as well, they just keep on supporting games which makes them popular, unlike BFME series which is slowly declining in online play due to EA not making any patches.
