Well my room mate and I finished writing and mixing the music behind my up and coming site. I know web music behind a site is obnoxious but it's only going to be played on the index page. The file I've included is a large WAV file but I have a 4 second loop to use for the site. I have to dig up some old software to convert WAV to mpg.
It should set the mood for the site when users first come there. Listen and comment if you like... It's a broadband download, if you don't have broadband than forget it.

Open the link in a new tab and let it be. It'll download in a few minutes. The final product will be a looping mpg under 1 meg.
The piano pans left to right.

Use VLC to convert the stuff.I'm pretty much sure it can do it.
Also,the music is pretty calm,maybe a tad boring,but ok I guess.

I didn't want music that distracted too much or was annoying. I'm trying to figure out how to loop it smoothly. I guess I'll have to try flash. I think it sets a nice mood though with the bongos.

I leaned something from sites that have music playing: It makes me grateful there's a mute button on my key pad.

I agree that background music on website's is annoying.
Generally these days users tend to be playing music through their media player and don't want to be interrupted with music on a web page. If you focus on the design well enough then you won't need background music, the atmosphere will create itself.
Now a days you find background music on fancy flash websites showcasing something such as a new movie or a splash page. It's all very good saying it'll only be on the index page, however, the index page is the first page you will visit and also the most common page you'll visit. Everyday people will go onto that page only to hear the same tune over and over. I'm not saying it's a bad tune, it's brilliant, you've done a good job producing the tune, but people will get sick of it no matter what tune you use. I'd suggest using the tune for something else to do with the website, perhaps an intro to a videocast or podcast.
