I don't think I'll ever be into playing WC3 competitively, now that SC2 is out, but I was just thinking a standard clan on battle.net.

Well, I don't know that I'd really be interested in doing it now that I have SC2. At least, I may go back to WC3 from time to time int he future, but I don't know about an IF clan at this point.
An SC2 clan though, perhaps, after retail.

Sure. I just saw a Q&A session with some of the developers, they said they are working on some group/clan stystem stuff that will be added in later. They were talking about more casual groups also, as opposed to competitive clans. That might be better for a group for the entire community of Iceforge.
But if your planning to get SC2 at some point, you might as well preorder it now to get a beta key.

Not sure if the offer will always be available. You may as well preorder it now, even if you won't play it for a while. They don't even charge you until the game ships.
