I'm getting ready to create the database scripts for planets.
So what makes up a planet?
This is what I have so far for a record of a planet:
Population: H, M, L, C, O
Heavy
Medium
Light
Colony
Outpost
Industry: H, M, L, N
Heavy
Medium
Light
None
Resources: R, A, P, B, Aa
Rich
Average
Poor
Barren
Alien artifacts
Aa would be in addition to R, A, P, B
So a planet could be P Aa
The planet would have a Poor level of resources but rich in Alien artifacts.
Summary:(A simple connotation in the main header of the record)
Legislative Capital, Executive Capital, Commerce Junction, Trade Capital, Tourist Site, Spiritual Icon, Research Outpost, Survivalist Outpost, Mining Stronghold, Mining Subordinate, Mining Outpost, Prison, Waste Disposal, Industrial Capital, Industrial Subordinate, Industrial Outpost, Pirate/Rogue
Environment:
Barren (enclosed environment required, for any form of normal carbon based life form; detriment)
Arid
Frigid
Frozen
Ocean
Swamp
Temperate
Tropical
Tundra
All of these are based on humans ability to withstand the elements. They also can be combined based on the planet. Such as Swamp Tundra. Meaning parts of the planet behave drastically different enough to contain a large enough areas encompassing both., This is best used as a majority of the planet, not for absolute. Planets have many variations in the environment.
Social Stability:
Very
Calm
Unaffected
Isolationist
Restless
Rebellious
Anarchy
These are the headers, but further descriptions are necessary:
General Summary, History, Social Structure, Economics, Politics, and Direction (What's the projected future of the planet?)
Each of these should be about 1-2 paragraphs.
I'd appreciate any feedback on things I might have forgotten.
Example:
Casmire:
P: Heavy
I: Medium
R: Heavy
Environment: Arid
Summary: Trade Capital
Social: Restless
Than a written list of the other categories. General Summary, History, Social Structure, Economics, Politics, and Direction.
Any feedback would be helpful.
Thanks, Hostile

Well I added a number of additional fields to the planet template. One no brainer was a planet tech level. I also added an allegiance field so we can tell which planet is aligned with which "ruling faction."
I was thinking of adding two more fields. Androids and Genetics. Each of these fields would have a range of measurements like: Frequent, infrequent, outlawed and such.
Just so people would know if there is a chance they would run into Androids or genetically modified humans on such a planet. Capital planets would have less of a chance, mining planets wouldn't care. Things like that.

Sounds cool.
Hey, going back to the environment of the planets, would Earth count as 'Ocean'? just curious.
Also, do you think it might be good to add in something about the planets status within the 'ruling faction'. Like is it only a small 'player' aligned for the benefits and protection the other 'bigger players' can give it, is it one of the major stake holders/leaders within the faction, etc.
Also i suppose you could include weather its part of the faction by choice or by force.

I've actually given each planet a primary environment and a secondary environment to cover such a question. It's obvious many planets would have variations of environments throughout the planet. Earth of course is tricky as you point out. It should be classified as an ocean planet with a temperate secondary environment.
Considering the variations, even an arid planet with an ocean as secondary environment would still have some portions with jungles and polar caps. A desert planet with arid secondary may still have large lakes and oasis along with polar caps.
With regards to factions. To begin the background will only include human territory called The Cluster. There is a civil war between the authoritarian Executive forces and the democratic Legislative forces. Planets are aligned by faction with a sub category called Executive subordinate. Meaning they are loyal only by the presence of Executive military forces.
Local politics is run this way. Each local capital planet has designations such as commerce capital or mining capital as an example. The smaller systems around them are called subordinate planets. A mining capital may have a nearby system that has a subordinate commerce planet that answers to the capital planet.
The Cluster is a big place so there are MANY hundreds of thousands of systems that are unexplored off the beaten path. Humanoid colonies are discovered every few years. Humanoids are sovereign and are left over colonies from the first two times humans swept through The Cluster. The Minervans and the Martians. The humanoids were genetically engineered to survive on the planet they live on. But scientifically Terrans are humanoids as well because they were engineered by the Minervans. Scientifically, we are all human subspecies.
