My cousin recently got a virus on her dell laptop and had me reformat it. Its running Vista Home Basic. after a fresh install something happened when I installed SP2. I got an error saying windows must be reinstalled. When I click cancel it blacks the screen out and says windows needs to be activated. However when I click activate it says this copy of windows is not valid and then i get an error message saying windows needs to be reinstalled. I don't see a product key with any of her paper work or on the computer its self; but even if i did it won't let me because it says i need to reinstall windows. I did use the Disc that came with the system.

I'm kinda lost and I would hate to go to Microsoft or Dell for support. Any ideas on what could be wrong? I'm gonna try repairing windows with the disc and then see if that solves anything.

There should be an OEM sticker on the laptop that has the product key on it. Search the key through Microsoft's database to check whether or not it's valid. If it is, format that son of a bitch and reinstall Vista.

Thats a given.

It was a clean reinstall by the way. There was no OEM sticker on the laptop or in the paperwork. As bullshit as that sounds. I guess she is SOL

No OEM sticker at all? You sure this thing wasn't stolen? Shit.

100% sure it wasn't stolen; considering it was her grandmother that ordered it and is still making payments on it. I'm also the one who helped her configure it too. I got a buddy of mine who thinks he has an extra vista key so I think I'm good.
