After viewing the unit guide provide by Kitkun, I came to know the purpose of most of units. However, I do not know the purpose of transport class ships. Are they meant for attack purposes only or do they have another role to play.

Take a look at their weapons and shields. Most transports make nasty anti-fighter units (Skiprays, Lamba-classes, Sentinel-classes, and Storm Trooper Transports are all quite good fighter killers) while many also make excellent anti-capital ship units (Skiprays again, Storm Trooper Transports, and ATR's). It's really the weapons that give you all you need to know about their purpose.

To restate Corsair, Transports are heavily armored small ships that can excel at either anti-fighter or anti-ship duty. For anti-fighter, look for lasers and concussion missiles. For anti-ship, look for proton torpedoes, rockets, and maybe concussion missiles.
The only way to really counter a Transport group with fighters is to use concussion missiles; normal fighter-sized ion cannons and lasers will be mostly ineffective. Any ship with anti-fighter lasers like a Dreadnaught or Lancer can be used against them, too, but don't expect them to go down quickly.
I believe some will also grant a small amount of income, but I wouldn't rely on them for that at all.

Well, it is clear enough that their role in space battles are to attack fighters or ships. However, what I really wanted to know is whether they have an additional role to play in aiding your economy. Well thanks to tropical Bob I know they generate a small income and thank Corsair114 for replying. My doubt was not well explained so sorry about that.

An update on the warhead maneuverability fix: concussion missiles have emerged as the weapon to use against transports, as they frequently don't miss. Most fighters and some bombers are able to dodge them completely in a dogfight, but transports are too sluggish. They still work devastatingly well against any kind of starfighter in a head-to-head engagement (although if you micro the most maneuverable interceptors, you can probably get them to dodge). The only way to really counter a Transport group with fighters is to use concussion missiles; normal fighter-sized ion cannons and lasers will be mostly ineffective.
