[Thats me!]

i didn't find a topic about it,so....
i think you already know this,even if you have been living under a rock.
the earthquake triggered a tsunami,and its dangerous for other countries as well.
and there seems to be problems with (a)nuke power plant(s).
there are already hundreds dead,and more missing.
I hope people there survive this somehow,and that other countries won't be badly affected by the tsunami

It was quite an earthquake. Sendai is just in ruins, and other places in Japan have had smaller issues. Quite a surprise for all of us. And apparently it is the biggest earthquake in Japan's history. I hope most people are making it all right, with all the flooding and destruction.

The Kobe earthquake in 1995 (the older members here should remember that) was a 6.8, and more than 6'000 people died. This was an 8.9, so imagine how much worse it could have been. I have a friend living in Tokyo at the moment, but a little weirdly he's actually enjoying himself. His first Facebook update was "Just experienced his first earthquake, and it was a big one! So happy ". He's just that kind of guy, I guess. But the important thing is he's okay. He's slept in a shopping centre these last couple of nights, and says he might make it back to Tokyo on Monday.

The quake has been moved from an 8.9 to a 9.1 now, making it the third strongest ever recorded. That's just fucking incredible.

Well, living on top of the meeting point of three tectonic plates has to give you some trouble at times. I'll be positively surprised if the death-toll stays around 10-20k. It would really say something about the preparedness of the Japanese.
