A common request we get is adding some kind of chat system to our forum. The Shoutbox plugin covers part of that wish, but obviously not all of it.

An official chat system addon for the board exists, but using it would require us to change our current licence to a regular one with less advantages (free upgrades forever) and pay an additional $80 per year. For a technology that's not really suited for real-time chat anyway. It may be an option in the future, but for now we've decided to go a different route.

We've created a permanent IRC channel for Revora called #revora at the freenode IRC network. To join us, download an IRC client, connect to chat.freenode.net and then /join #revora. If you don't know how to do that, you'll find lots of IRC tutorials with your favourite search engine (I'm an IRC beginner myself). The advantage of IRC is that it's fast, simple and has been successfully used for decades.

The channel is still very empty at the moment as only Starkku and me have joined it, but I bet if we can get a few people online, there will be a nice casual discussion. IRC also supports private chats if you need that.

Admins can contact me to get permanent operator status in the channel.

Out of interest, does anyone know if you can use IRC like a Hamachi network?

Also, Rad, you might want to check out your signature.

What do you mean like a Hamachi network? It's not a VPN if that's what you have in mind.

I've been off irc for 9 years I think, though it can't hurt to install. If i knew how to make it work with trillian I'd be happier though.

Also, getting a replacement irc webclient that synchronizes with Revora's user system might be a good replacement for the shoutbox. add it into the main-page and hey-presto: instant shoutbox replacement.

For convenience we have a Revora Team Skype group setup with the possibilities of moderators if needed
Skype Group Magnet Link;
skype:?chat&blob=Hmq5RsYIyWBu8kbJPen27ad6CV6jT0MtJZNKK4bMR-UB3DKdfWmR3xr26XP3VduzS_mZoEuF4igyK7lshbZ-FZYBg8ylUN2-UlYB5g

Copy and Paste that into your browser, it will ask what program its associated with if it cant find it, search for your skype EXE
Also, its free which is a big bonus over IRC, it also includes file sharing, and other nice features including group calling

Magnet links would be nice, but copy/paste works i guess

Yeah, no.

P.S.
Tested in a different browser.
Chrome: just tries to Google it all the time.
IE does it right, copy-paste.

I am of course the great Matthew something.

It's a free service... it's not like we're asking you to move the ocean for community communication channels.  I hate Skype, compared to MSN, but it's currently the best platform for instant chat and group talk (without having to spend money).
