IRC is free, hence I use it at all.

And what about the people who doesn't use the Skype client for the Skype service? (me)
And what about downloading the IRC Client? like people who don't use the IRC service? like me
skype, most people already have it, no extra programs to install, its there for your convenience
and skype is a lot better chat wise then IRC which is dated piece of shit
Skype is to have people on as much as possible, so they would be naturally incentive to talk, communicate etc where as IRC its pretty much when they remember to open it
and even then, does IRC allow you to browse the past for any missed chat logs? no? skype does, and it allows you to contribute
does IRC allow you to literally voice your opinion, being able to voice chat can be a pleasure, to hear other people for once and know them better, like Duke's sexy accent
i cant believe we'd need this argument, its painfully obvious that skype overall is a better choice for several reasons, Sure its not expected for skype to do groups, but it does and we can.
as for IRC, what advantages does it have? when you get on, what are the chances there anyone actually on? maybe one other person?
Pasidon was right, people will try it, but other then that, they'll forget to open it because there is no incentive
also, skype works on mobile devices, and its just more widely accepted and used

Well I guess it's just preference. Personally I find Skypes chat window infuriating. They should pop out into separate chat windows instead of being stuck in the main app surrounded by clutter and with only an annoying sound and tiny orange dot to indicate someone has said something. As for voice calling it's useful in certain situations but I'd rather not have the ability to be called by anyone from Revora.

IRC is Neolithic technology... if you prefer programs because they lack features... that's dumb. Absurdly dumb. Just use Skype, Bolty... it's much more sensible since it's pretty much impossible to win someone over to using IRC over Skype. I hate it too, but it's the popular chat program right now. Everyone who wants to be able to communicate online uses it. Kind of a pain if you're stuck in some dream world that thinks everyone is just going to wake up from their nightmare and all of a sudden use IRC because the demons on their heads told them it was inferior.
But simply put... avoid using Skype and it's pretty much not possible to do a live chat with most of us, and I really don't prefer that.

Oh you. I said I'm using Skype but not via Skype.
I have Trillian. It can't open Skype links but all the other functionality are available and I don't want to download that client (which I hate the design and smileys of) since I am on Skype already at the same time when I'm on IRC.
Because I use the same client to handle both, ha. Multiclients FTW.
IRC clients have logging ability, Digi, I have 5 MB long log at least from Revora alone already. If you use Mibbit, that's your failure, it's like using eBuddy for MSN then complaining about the missing functionality.
Also IRC has the option of being public. For Skype group calls you need to be invited or some other junk. For IRC you just know where the channel is, and it's done.

I'm not sure how public chat rooms are beneficial to us.

Revora is a big network. I, for example, only have Speeder, AG, Apollo and Mevitar via my contacts, the majority of the people I talk with are usually through public networks. IRC is one.
I'm a follower but not a contacteverybody person. Besides, the point of a community is that it's public and not a closed group.

That would be fine if we were popular. I have a feeling some people here actually think otherwise and that outside people might actually show up to the things we organize.

Its a shame that IRC is a bit awkward, doesn't save history for you when you are gone, doesn't show you that people are typing, needs a external client that you normally forget in this time and age(trillian is my method right now, better than having another window take up space imo) etc.etc. There are irc-integrations into websites that could work, kinda like the shoutbox does right now(Shame shoutbox costs a bit of money, I'm suspecting it might be worth it though).
Also, my sexy voice is skype exclusive
Another problem is that msn is going down, skype is integrating that shit together, so another problem. Hopefully they'll add more handy functions to the chat-part of skype then.

Like having chat boxes that aren't the size of Rockefeller Plaza. But still... rather have bulky chat boxes and a lack of strangers over IRC in pretty much every other aspect.

I never liked MSN, terribly clunky and ever since they updated in in 2010 its really been as bad as yahoo chat
IRC is closer to team speak with text only
and those bitching about skype emoticons, don't worry, everyone else hates them too
also, that's a pathetic excuse. Skype is clean and i prefer tab's over windows, and the tabs can be minimized too
for those who don't know, each contact is a tab, which keeps your chat with them when clicked on
I also like skypes sharing capabilities, also in groups, only moderators can group call, and you cant call people individually unless you have them on friends list

Skype might be clean, but Trillian is more cleaner. It was originally an IRC client afterall...
It also can have tabs but I hate tab contacts (on my Linux wwhich I boot up once a month I have to use Skype and tbh it's disgusting).

Trillian? I remember using that a few times... it wasn't bad. Just no one I knew ever used it.
I never liked MSN
Blasphemy! I've used MSN since like 2005, and it never really had an update I hated. MSN allowed lots of fun, and I remember not having too much trouble when about 8 different people talked to me at the same time. Tab chat = good, G-Dog. Tab chat very good.

I vaguely remember having to install msn+ to get tabbed windows in msn to begin with, it was not fun having more than a few to talk to to begin with.

Retroshare is much better in my opinion!
RetroShare is a Open Source cross-platform, Friend-2-Friend and secure decentralised communication platform.
It lets you to securely chat and share files with your
friends and family, using a web-of-trust to authenticate peers and
OpenSSL to encrypt all communication.
(you have to share PGP key with your friend though)
RetroShare provides filesharing, chat, messages, forums and channels
http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/
Other then that, i am avid IRC idler and a skype user.

Gosh Sunny... stop ruining everything with your opinions. Retroshare is a load of donkey doo-doo. That's a lie... it's actually ok.
