Why do the units have to be random characters?

Because we're not limited by canon that way it's just like how Dota used Warcraft characters to create new ones.

Because most of the characters I've made here don't have actual names and what would be the point of having LOTR heroes when GOME already has it.

The characters then couldn't break lore by having over the top powers.

WB have proven litigious when a mod comes close to a property they have look at MERP.

Secondly these characters aren't known by any names because they are new, that's the point new characters instead of just reusing BFME's heroes and having an unbalanced system because there'd be no way of balancing a character like Frodo against someone like Gandalf, Witch King or Sauron.
