Question, what way do you like moving the camera around in an RTS?

BattleGrid_Banner.jpg
I wanted to get around to asking everyone this, but while booting up my mod/game BattleGrid, I have come across a interesting dilemma with RTS camera movement.
for every movement function rotate via mouse, rotate Via keyboard they depend on a system for each one. some getting more complex then others
and well, I don't want to invest in something everyone will hate

as it stands I'm using WASD to move the camera and Q&E to rotate (R to reset)
With BattleGrid being somewhat of an RPG single hero RTS I feel I need to mimic controls from games like DotA 2

but with that said, I feel like i would be missing something in this area and would like to deliver what people are more

inclined to use as each style will be its own independent system layered on top of each other

Feel free to share your thoughts and strategies, and what you like best.

Well multiple options is better of course. I'm not sure what the difference between touching the edges and moving to the egdes to move the camera is, but I like doing that in certain RTS, it's always useful. I also much prefer using right click to move the camera around. Personally holding the middle button seems a lot more difficult.

You could have the WASD for faster camera movement and use the mouse for smaller movements.

And moving the mouse to the edge of the screen gives a small peak of that side! ;D

Well Right click is often used for movement, and drag right click is often formation modes, middle click isn't so hard.
but if people find it awkward I could put in an alternative too (mac uses don't have middle click etc etc)

How do you feel about Hold Alt and drag with left/right mouse?

I was conflicted for a while, to move away from the RTS camera style for a more 3rd person retro feel

After about 2 weeks of debate

I felt it best to stick to the RTS style. It wouldn't work as well if it was a 3rd person tank game

Yea, go tradish.  The whole ALT idea you had was slightly terrible.  When it comes to RTS, I need to be able to just use my mouse for quick mouse action.  Vroom.
