Hi,
After installing Commandos 2 demo using c2demo.exe, I noticed some registry entries which is unrelated to the game were modified. Actually, the following registry entries were modified or created:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window title
Both of them contains a domain name "game1.zj.cninfo.net". I could not connect to that domain but "whois" information turned out that the domain "cninfo.net" is owned by "CHINANET-SH, CHINANET Shanghai province network, Shanghai, 23, China". (See https://www.robtex.c...et.html#records for details)
I think these registry entries are obviously unrelated to Commandos 2 since these registry entries are for Internet Explorer.
Modifying these entries affect the first page when Internet Explorer are opened, and the title string of Internet Explorer.
Additionally, I found that several files in Windows system directory were also created or modified.
I don't know why c2demo.exe behaves like this. Anyway, I suppose the users who has technical knowledge can easily fix the modified registry, but ordinary users will feels difficulty for this.
By the way, I used Process Monitor to monitor the behavior of c2demo. Process Monitor is available in Microsoft's web site <http://technet.micro...s/bb896645.aspx>.
I think it would be better to add some notice about the behavior of c2demo.exe into the download page of Commandos HQ.
Alternatively, repackaging the content of c2demo.exe as an zip file. I think distributing in zip format is better and safer than distributing in exe format.
Best regards,
