I want to see what people think of the idea:

Take a sector or other smaller grouping of planets, and make a GC map based on it with the same attention to detail as the rest of PR, and basically strip out most research and half the ships, and only have a limited amount buildable (IE: you can't rebuild certain stuff you start with) and restricted population so you (and the AI) have to do more with less, forcing spam to take a backseat to strategy.

Such a campaign, I imagine, would be far easier to add than larger scale GC maps, while giving a wider variety of mission types.

We could even get re-do's of the space maps from the X-Wing series as the GC map.

Our current campaign set has been heavily modified since v1.2. Campaigns are smaller in general (primarily for performance reasons) and there are certainly more population-limited campaigns than before. It certainly incentivizes expansion for the Empire with their highly-crewed cruisers, and in general makes agriworlds more important.

Actually I was thinking, is there enough info out there to make the X-wing vs Tie Fighter Balance of Power campaign into a small GC like that? It at least might serve as a good starting point for such, or a tutoria GC

There might be too many canon and balance issues though

I think the main problem is that we don't have any of the systems/planets that are in that campaign.

We could always come up with our own campaigns here on the forum (be they made entirely here on the forum, or based on canon events) using systems the mod already has.

I had an idea recently about more massive campaigns. I don't know how well could it work but here it goes:

Campaign in largest form (from 1.0 or 1.1) was 178 planets big - or something around that value.

Performance of the game would improve dramatically if we remove single planets and instead focus on controlling sectors (wherever possible). Of course population cap, income and stuff need to be properly calculated but it isn't any less feasible than all other improvements since version 1.0. One sector one planet on GC map.

Of course I'm aware that it may simplify things too much for some but why not run a trial. That way universe could be expanded drastically, with less lag, less units on the map, with removal of many useless planets - compacted into bigger sectors. GC with more emphasis on strategy than building endless runs of cargo ships.

Larger scale, with more use of sectors to alleviate the way some planets are way too close would be rather neat.
