The press release had all the compassion of a multinational corporation.  Fine, I've conceded to expect as much.  Substantially though, I don't see how this is much different than the situation with the prequels, where George told his story and the EU adjusted.  There's only so much damage that can be done in a character-driven film.  Not much of the EU was affected by the prequels - granted, the timeline was held in reserve prior to their release.  With the sequels, they can change the labels of canon on the Holocron, but can't erase millions of fans' perceptions of what constitutes the GFFA.  They're not going to say "Thrawn never really happened" in the opening crawl.  I would expect that it will become apparent that the Solo and Skywalker kids no longer officially exist.  That throws off a lot of story arcs - Young Jedi Knights, New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force - but does little to the Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Empire, or anything else that pertains to the GCW setting of PR.  Based on the information we know now, I'm not worried about the implications of 34 ABY.

The ships and locations in SW: Rebels TV series will be a lot more on-point for purposes of the mod.

Ok after much slicing, bribing and other such villainy, I have been able to acquire note on several ideas for the "side story" movies. It is worse than we excepted....

1) Springtime for Vader: A Musical Tour through the Dark Times.
It a good time to be a Sith. Sure his wife is dead, his children are dead, his droids are gone, and his best friend left him mutilated by a lava pool, but did you see this sweet armor? Join everyone's favorite Dark Lord of the Sith as he brings order to the Galaxy through music... And orbital bombardments

2) Pirates of the Corellian Run.
Follow the epic tale if the galaxy's most notorious space pirate; Arr Arr Bink! This brave young Gungan defies both Corsec and the Imperial Customs at every turn, but when he steals a shipment meant for the dreaded Tyber Zann, has he finally met his match, or with we once again hear his defiant cry of "Yusa allwaysa remember, the day yusa almostta caught Arr Arr Binks!"

3) Boogie Wookiee Knights
Chewie always knew his nephew, Lowbacca, was special, but it wasn't until the he uses incredible talents to win the first annual Kashyyyk Planetary Dance competition. A performance this good could only mean one thing, Lowbacca can use the Force. And when the Imperial Remnant threatens to prove its cultural superiority once and for all, only Lowbacca's Force enhanced dancing can defeat the Empire's Champions, Villian Dance and the T.E.I. Breakers, at their Death Star Ball!
There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no death, there is the Force.

As much as I hate the fact that the classical EU is most likely no longer going to be canon, I find it really weird you people are "surprised" by this. You act like Lucasfilm is "disregarding the fans" - let me just give you all a dose of reality: as much as the Thrawn Trilogy and other books may be great, the vast majority of mainstream audiences have not read them. He is disregarding a (relatively) small fanbase.

Of course it is depressing as fuck that when most people think of Star Wars, they'll think of Jar Jar Binks and not Thrawn or other characters we all know, and that the terrible prequels are now held "superior", through canon at least, than factually better novels and stories - but are you really, really surprised and so utterly enveloped in this little bubble that you "expected" them not to disregard it? Really? You know where Lucas' and Lucasfilm's priorities were. I am not surprised, I was expecting this.

Ignoring SW:EU is similar to removing Borg storyline from Star Trek (probably 1000+ books on the subject alone)

Star Trek novels were never considered canon by anyone and never made an effort to be consistent. They constantly contradict each other and various episodes of the TV series. Yes the Star Wars EU actually made an effort to be consistent (though some issues have existed, such as Dark Empire using the term "Rebel Alliance" when it should be New Republic), which can't be said of almost any other franchise's EU, which is what gave it it's debatable canocity compared to, say, Star Trek's EU. That and Lucas /did/ take things from it, such as the name Coruscant. From that standpoint I can sorta understand how Lucas not acknowledging that stuff is kinda arrogant, but I didn't expect otherwise.

Also, am I the only person who likes the post-Jedi EU the best (as well as the civil war era and old pre-civil war era, like the old Lando novels, for example)? I don't care as much about old Republic stuff. Everyone in the comments of that youtube video are bitching about KotoR, relatively few about Thrawn and whatnot, or the X-Wing Series. Those were always my favorites, the ones that continued the feel and art direction of the original films (hard to explain). It's another reason why I hated the prequels. Even if they weren't bad movies, I'd feel I'd have some subconcious dislike of them anyway as Star Wars movies at least due to the art direction and numerous other factors. It's one of the reasons why a lot of the newer EU stuff that takes place during the civil war period sometimes rubs me the wrong way, because it constantly references the prequels which I wish didn't exist. I always feel like it's "tainted" now.

Ether way, at the end of the day, I feel that just by having the prequels canon, a long with many other things like the embarassing clone wars cartoons, that what I liked about Star Wars is now mostly offset by stuff I, at best, don't care about, and at worst, is completely intolerable, childish, and embarassing. Note that mainstream audiences are more experienced with the latter than anything I, as well as other people, enjoy in the Star Wars universe. This latest news is pretty much the nail in the coffin. This all compounds onto the reason why I forced myself to stop caring about Star Wars. It was at least partially ruined by the prequels, and now a huge chunk of what we liked SW for is most likely going to be excised. Just deal with it. It sucks but it's something we all need to swallow.

I agree, but it still sucks.

That said, that's why in the thread that got posted when the LucasArts game studio was closed I was not mourning.

I don't think anyone here is actually all that surprised so much as using this as a means to vocalize our disappointment. I was expecting this since Disney bought the license. To be honest as much as might be discouraged in Disney's new era the truth is that for every Thawn trilogy quality item that is out there there are three New Rebellion quality pieces...

I won't hold my breath that Disney will hold the same tradition that we've know and that I have grown up with, but honestly I'm not expecting that great of a change in the overall course of how things have been going over time. Nice steady decline in quality in favor of quantity...

Technically this does erase the Vong though so there is something of a win

Ignoring SW:EU is similar to removing Borg storyline from Star Trek (probably 1000+ books on the subject alone)

Star Trek novels were never considered canon by anyone and never made an effort to be consistent. They constantly contradict each other and various episodes of the TV series.

Did I said - at any point - that ST books are 'canon' or not?  No. Just like SW cannot be 'canon', it is bloody fiction for crying out loud.

As for contradicting each other... I'm in no mood for pointless arguments... Of course there are bad and utterly bad books in every family. All good series keep time line intact (unless we jump into e.g. side stories, mirror mirror or myriad universe - oh yesss I like these novels very much :) ). Just like some ST books have problems, same goes for SW novels. Pretty much every book have holes which is main problem with fiction. Keeping time line intact is easy if there is 30-50 or even 100 books on the subject. It is near impossibility if there is hell knows how many thousands... (not counting divergences of parallel universes, something that SW is not exactly famous for).

Argument was against ignoring EU, not against ignoring so-called "canon". I cannot express in words how disappointed I'm  that I'll never see Thrawn on big screen. Somewhere on this forum many, many ... months back I said that Cliff Simon would be perfect for the role. He played Ba'al superbly, he would also fit into Thrawn boots. Just look at him. Perfect Thrawn, voice is perfect...and - finally- he has plenty of experience with glowing eyes already! LOL

Probably the only way for moving with EU is now only animation as main cast is just past... reasonable age. (euphemism - I don't want to be cruel)

When it comes down to it, at a certain point it all becomes a personal choice/belief. Despite what Lucas or Disney or anyone else says each person is going to have there own view on what/how things have happened over the years in our beloved make believe universe. And that is one if the beautiful things about fiction verse reality, we can all have our interpretation of fiction.

I have the smallest if hopes that we will get a Shadows of the Empire animation or some such. I remember reading some where that Lucas liked the story a lot and claimed he would have made it a movie if it had been out around the original movies

Aizen, during the run of SW books, lucasarts REQUIRED the books fit into an established continuity and to not not contradict eachother.

Whereas Trek never had any attempt at that, outside of an individual series of books.

What it boils down to is simple: The companies in charge are not trusted to do it right for the current fanbase.

And if Jar Jar Abrams reboot of trek has shown anything, the new SW trilogy will be inviting us older fans to step out of the fanbase and not come back.

After TCW, I haven't exactly had a lot of faith in LFL. So from my point of view, Disney and Abrams haven't made me nearly as nervous as LFL has. Though this "films, films, and more films" mindset disappoints me a lot, because Star Wars is far more than just films and television to me.

I can't disagree.

Even with the way he's done Trek poorly, Abrams is more likely to do it right than LFL.

On the contrary, I've seen it in the battle of Endor, it's in the background, you just took it for a star cause it's sized four 4 pixels. But it's there, I've seen it.
