After more than 4 years, I'm going to upgrade my work PC. I'll need to get a new core (motherboard, CPU, memory), but can salvage the rest from other rigs.

For the core components, I was thinking about:

- ASUS Z97-K

- Intel Core i5 4590

- 8GB Crucial RAM, PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz

Anything stupid here? Can I get better for the same price? The budget is about 400 euros.

Latency on them rams?

I got this pc late in 2012, going to use it another two years, I think, as its pretty acceptable.

CAS latency 11, about which I can say:

But for a small price increase, I can get CL8, so I might as well go with that.

These days, 4 years isn't as ancient as it used to be in the early 2000's. My laptop, which is around the same age, still performs adequately (the screen hinges have broken off though :p)

However, the PC I'm using now wasn't the greatest performer even when it was new, and more importantly, it has recently started crashing randomly a few times a day.

Uh-oh.  I spy unkempt laundry.

Looks decent, regardless of how outdated it is.  Not sure why you need a desktop AND a laptop out on the same desk though.
