Decided to try making my own model for Erebor dwarves, in order to make sure they match the Iron Hills units in style, texture and color...

Started with the helmet. Turned out to be easier to make than the Iron Hills one =)

Started painting... and testing it on the dwarven head I made for IH dwarves. Fits like a glove  :thumbsuphappy:

Btw - working with a wireless mouse is driving me nuts. Have to change the batteries several times a day, so they won't even have time to load in between. This is my third wireless mouse, and they're all crap. Never again  :evilthinkin: Anyone else use wireless?

Mouse works fine, as long as mouse is working... :p

Anyways, back on topic - painting dwarven decorations on this helmet is rather tedious, but I'm getting there. The only "problem" when doing this helmet is that the highly detailed drawings by Weta's Nick Keller doesn't fully match what we see on screen, to 100%. But the drawings are the only images that show the helmet, in detail, from all angles. As such, this SEE version will be a small mixure of those drawings, and the props on screen. This is only aparent in very small details such as number of lines in certain patterns, exact placement of bolts and such. So no biggie and I assume most will recognize this as an Erebor dwarven helmet anyway, I hope  :trickydick:

About 75% done...  :smilehuh:

Thank you.

Paint, all done.

There's a silly amount of details, I know, but it's basically all in the texture.  :thumbsupxd:

Started on the body... Pauldrons was a bit tricky to get right, but the rest should be easier.

And in case anyone's wondering why I'm talking to myself in this topic - it's nice to have a track record of your progress, when looking back  :smile2ap:

Horray! Finally done with the extremely tedious painting. This was like nothing else I have done so far  :whathuh: But it turned out good, I'm happy  :thumbsuphappy:

The only thing I'm contemplating before exporting for rigging, is wether I should add the slight "copper touch" to the color of the metal, as seen in many shots of the armor worn by actors...

Ebody5.jpg

The Erebor model now matches the Iron Hills model, in style, proportions, texture and color scheme  :smilehuh:

This is your best model yet, I think. You seem to be taking lighting and contrast into account more, which was my biggest point of criticism in previous work (unless my eyes are cheated by pretty zBrush lighting rigs).

Well, I guess it could be related to these models being high on hard surface metal parts, that gives more shadows in zBrush's very fancy lighting, yes. But you are also right that I did shade it more, for the very same reason. It's "easier" to put shadows in between, under and around sharp metal, than soft skin and cloth. Whatever's lacking on other models, can be trimmed in Photoshop though, in terms of more contrast, adjusted color balance and off course shadows. Dain is one example that will get more shading in the texture. I will make sure all models look their best possible before release. Also, this (these) model/s are high poly and about 6-7 million polys each. They won't look quite as good in low poly, and certainly not in W3D Viewer, or in game. But, I'm quite sure they'll look better than those dreadful cartoony Warhammer-ish vanilla Guardians  :crazed:

What do you think about the "copper tone". Should I go for it?

Hmm.

Well maybe once you've finished this model completely I could look into reproducing that look? It looks like a fun little thing to do.

I'll slap some tint on there and show you what I mean... It's much easier to paint here, on the model, than afterwards on the texture...

Oh I know what you mean from looking at the picture. I'm quite confident I can get that exact look (yes, by 'painting on the texture' :p). So if you want to move on, you can leave that detail to me.

And yeah, I am blatantly trying to steal this little job out from under you because it looks like a fun thing to do. :p
