Who's your favorite commandos character and why? Especially in the context of Commandos 2.

I feel like the only person in the world who's a fan of Natasha. Whatever review I turn to, they mostly describe her as useless, not missed in C3 and so on. Perhaps this could be said based on the original game, but only because it's so easy that her abilities aren't required and she only appears in 3 missions anyway. Needless to say that the situation is different in Destination Paris mod. Granted, she can't solo a mission due to the traditional inability to punch, but if I were to pick two characters for an average mission, one of them would always be Natasha, and other one would be anyone else other than The Sniper and The Spy (preferably The Diver).

What makes her so good in my opinion is that she's not just The Sniper and The Spy in one person, but does their job just as good as them too. I never really found a use for The Sniper's pole climbing, except as a defensive measure in one mission. Natasha's glitchy undetectable Ctrl sniper shooting got fixed in DP 2.0, but that's no big deal, she can still sneak in and shoot from a blind spot.

There are several ways Natasha and The Spy could be compared in.

Detectability by the officers: unlike The Spy, Natasha won't be detected by the officer enemies in the long range, but she can't crawl while staying in disguise too (although if there's a water access, it still could be done if really needed). This gives her advantage in movement speed, but can still be inconvenient because some patrol officers in some missions still do detect her in the long range.

The melee weapon: I don't care for the syringe that much, especially since it's nerfed in DP 2.0 (The Spy gets instantly exposed if the syringe is selected). It's still silent to use and takes only one slot in inventory, but other than that, it's not that different from Natasha's bottles aka limited punches. Although, to be fair, the syringe could be used to to stun an enemy w/o attracting anyone's attention (the duration is really long in DP), could be a good solution in some situations.

The unique ability: The Spy has one truly unique and useful ability to move lowest rank soldiers that normally don't leave position, although it's typical that the mission authors make the officer uniform hard to obtain or not present at all. Natasha has a unique ability in that she can "interact" with the patrols (The Spy can't no matter what uniform rank). If used correctly, this allows another punching commandos to take out the entire patrol at once. Not truly unique in function, but so much faster, easier and more fun to use than the bottle 'n' cigarettes way (and there are not many other silent options).

Besides gameplay, she's nice looking too, for low resolution models (although I prefer the original game's texture over the one in DP). And excellent voice acting, but same could be said for any other commandos.

Alright I'll do this. Sniper is almost the definition of a commando. So it's the sniper, also in C2.

Huh :?: :) You win my thanks for sharing your thoughts, so thanks Jeroen. Or sorry if i don't get it, i was just curious to see who people like and why, if there's a preference at all. Surprised that no one chose the green beret, i know he's not as useful in C2 as in 1, but it's common that people like one character in general even if it's because of a single installment.

You have only 8 votes in your poll, so it's hardly a good cross-section through all Commandos' fans ;). I didn't vote, by the way, as I have no particular favorite.

That's OK. I had expected to see at least some replies with motivations. And I still have not gotten over my disappointment with C2. :-)

Personally I'd say the sniper is the most useless in Commandos 2, he can't do anything that any of the other Commandos can do other than snipe which Natasha can do whilst in disguise, and even in BEL/BCD i found him the most useless, because I always tend to have most or all of my sniper ammo left at the end of the mission, only really useful for out of reach enemies which isn't too common.

My favourite would probably change in each game, in Commandos BEL/BCD it would be the Spy because he was so OP there, especially in BEL where he couldn't be detected unless getting caught using a weapon. In Commandos 2 it would be the diver just because of his throwing knife ability which is arguably the best silent method of killing enemies, and the harpoon is probably the most overpowered weapon once you learn how to do the glitch to use it on land, the spy in Comm2 was heavily nerfed so he's not my favourite here.

It's hard for me to name a favorite in Commandos 2 because the skills are more evenly distributed than they were in Commandos 1. I mean every member of the team can use the cigarettes as a distraction, drive a car, knock out an enemy soldier, carry them away and use the MP40 and rifle. In C1 you needed 3 men to carry out those operations. But I would still say that the Spy is my favorite character in every part of the Commandos series (even in Strike Force).

Favourite commando and stronger commando are diffrent thing. Obviously my favorite commando is the sapper. I record his voice in dp, even I made some photoshop with my face in some missions. He have belly, he have moustache and he have flamethrower. The flamethrower is too powerfull weapon, make him the best character in c2, the flamethrower can be used even as silent weapon. The diver is the second best man in c2 ( or c3) Because knifes and harpoon, very close to sapper. C1 or bcd are completely different, there the sapper is normal, spy, green berett and fins top 3.

Same, i searched and couldn't find a similar topic, so thought it could be interesting. But hey, now there are replies :) i hope you mean the remaster, yeah it doesn't look like it's going to be an improvement in any way, i just found a footage of devs playing the first two training missions... bleh.

Agree that the sniper is lacking in C2, i didn't like the changes in 1.46 that gave a lot of shared abilities to many commandos, but molotovs and smoke for the sniper was actually fine for balance reasons. I think the beret in C2 is kind of useless too, in DP there are some interesting applications for the knife, but in the original there's no incentive for using it over punching. I think it was a bad idea to make everyone able to use the decoy too. At least digging is still unique and useful. The Diver would be my second vote as a favorite, it's not just the knife and harpoon, but most importantly the hook, that thing is OP, like a flamethrower but infinite and fully silent (even against the patrols), one of the best ways of mass neutralizing enemies (but i'm thinking mostly DP here).

One word, maybe few: Rene Duchamp. The man that can mix up any type of poison so to give the bad people a real... hangover. I have always called the Spy - The Troublemaker. Always funny to knock down someone and watch what happens when 10 more come to search the place, lure them away in your own manners. Else Whisky helps if things turn hot.

Yeah I agree that the GB was kinda useless in Comm2 as well, the introduction of cigarettes made his decoy pretty much useless which was the number 1 method of luring an enemy in BEL and on top of that it sucks in Commandos 2. and the diver can pretty much do everything he can and do it better. In my opinion BEL was the best in terms of abilities for each commando, its a shame that they made them all share a lot of the same abilities in Comm2 and even more so in Comm3, the spys syringe is also pretty much useless here too and i've never understood why he can be detected just for running, that made no sense in my opinion, I understand that he was the most overpowered commando in BEL but they nerfed him way too much I think, I liked the different rank of uniforms but the rest of the nerfs were unnecessary in my opinion.

Decoy useless? Since when it tends to be...useless? It's the second best method after cigarettes. Plus enemy soldiers never would seize that for your convenience, least how it uses to work in MoC. :D

Why everything should be considered useless if you find it not sufficient for a given situation.... The more tools, the more endings.

My biggest problem with the decoy in C2 is that I could rarely single out an enemy. I think because the levels are so compact, inside buildings but also outside, usually more than one soldier would react. That does not make it a disappointment per sé, it's just a less useful tool.

BTW an enemy should also be alarmed seeing the decoy, making it a substitute for ciggy's.

My fav is the Spy, both in 2 and 3 :thumbsuphappy:

Love to walk amidst enemies to scout out how best to deal with the situation. In DP Thief is my favorite because he can finally tie up enemies, and he's much faster and best at getting at impossible places

The Thief, he can run fast, climb through windows and on telephone wires and can garrote dudes in C3. (Granted, in C3 he has basically no range with guns and therefore can barely fight at all outside of maybe inside a train car.)

I really like his ability set, even if most missions don't give many chances to use all of them.
