Unable to finish "Shadows of the past" and corrupt saves

I'm new here (hi!) and have just installed the Age of the Ring 6.1, but am having some difficulties with the game pretty early on. I am guessing that they are bugs, but figured I would ask here if anyone knows what is causing them?

First off, I have noticed several save files will not load and say that they are corrupted. It seems to be that this happens when I save before or after a battle. With a game that has several "instances" per level and no autosave though, this can be super frustrating as I have had to run through the Opening segments of "Shadows of the past" more times than I care too as I don't particularly enjoy that sort of stealth level anyway lol. 

Secondly, and my biggest issue, is when I do reach Bree and have to defend the Prancing Pony it tells me to claim resources with heroes and lights up the inn's in the town but does not actually allow me to claim them. I have tried a group of heroes. Singular heroes, all at one flag, one at each. I get the 'flag pole' icon when I hover over the taverns banner, but when I click on it nothing happens. The icon disappears and the hero(es) just stand their doing their idle animation. Considering how fast the npc guards die too, this means that within literal seconds of the 2nd wave of the attack my game says "defeated" without any time to actually do anything or even try and defend. It seems that as soon as one Nazgul even reaches the Pony, the level ends. It's quite hard to even understand why considering I still have fighters and all my heroes are there waiting. 

It looks like a lot of thought and love has gone into the mod, and to begin with I was loving the almost interactive movie style of the storytelling. Unfortunately though after a few days of re-running the same level, watching the same cut-scenes and facing the same game-breaking bugs I am at a point where I am not sure whether I should just give up. I don't want to though, and so would politely ask that if anyone can help me with the taverns bug at least, I would really appreciate it. 

If I could just have one opportunity to finish the level and get the next autosave, I might not quite lose my mind completely lol.

About the inn bug, I'm sad to say that I never faced this issue with my game, the hobbits can capture the inns as usual. Do you have the same type of bugs during a skirmish or a WOTR game ?

 

About the difficulty of the level, it's true that it is very difficult. The idea is to just stay at the Prancing Pony and hold while refreshing from time to time the troops with pikemen essentially to kill the Nazgul. I won with that specific strategy, with any other I failed miserably. Try this one and we'll see after if we can do something for the autosave.

Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately I never seem to have enough men to get past 2 or 3 waves. Without being able to capture the inns, it all depends on how many men I can keep alive from the initial guards and that only tends to be about 10 at the most. 

I've been playing WoTWK and BfME2 and have not had the issue with capture points at all, and so I am guessing it is mod/level specific. It's a real shame because I was looking forward to getting to the later parts of the game (namely Moria, Rohan and Minas Tirith) but as things stand i've pretty much given up on trying to play for now. It's just too frustrating when you know what you have to do but it just won't let you lol.

Tried a skirmish in AotR 6.1 from the menu too, ran a map and was able to capture both a dock and an inn. Reinstalled the mod, tested the same skirmish again and could still claim both with no issues. Reloaded a save in Bree, still unable to use the heroes to claim one.  :?:  :scars:  :thumbsdownsmiley: 

I'm pretty sure the mod just doesn't want me to play it any further lol

Well reinstalled the mod a third time, started the campaign from scratch - exact same issue with the inns. Basically the game is broken to a point that this level is just incompletable for me since the Bree guards die in 2/3 hits and without the inns I can't make/get more. 

It's a shame, I had high hopes for this mod but I think it's just a no go for me. I'll check back to see if anyone can offer a fix or advice on this post over the next few days but if not I think I might as well just uninstall. If the makers can work the bugs out though, I think this could be gold.

I've uploaded a quick video of the bug here, i attempt to take two inns (one with Aragorn and one with Merry) and neither do anything. The video cuts off showing no action with the flag, but rest assured I have had my heroes at all inns for 20-60 seconds on some play throughs and had nothing happen, so I do not believe it is just a fault with an animation since nothing ever happens.

I'm sorry to tell that I don't have any solution for you, my version of the game isn't bugged in that way.

 

However, if that can comfort you a little bit, the campaign isn't really the best part of the mod, even though it's quite creative and interesting (no offense, AOTR Team). Only the Fellowship of the Ring is implemented in 6.1, and the missions in it are almost always hero control and moving them along the map while killing some orcs or hiding under an elven cape.

 

To truly understand the full potential of the mod (and not only the potential, also its inherent quality), you need to play skirmishes, WOTR games or online with friends. A lot of factions are waiting for you that you'll not see in the campaign in its actual form. Give it a try, it's fun. Funnier than the vanilla game, in fact.

Thanks anyway Neravar, I appreciate you commenting all the same. 

At this point me uploading the video is pretty much so that the mod makers (if they see it) can notice that the issue does occur and maybe address it in the future. I might try some of the other modes before uninstalling, but tbh I was just trying to inject a bit more life into the game and maybe play the story in another manner. I'm a bit disappointed naturally, but this is the nature of modding any game. Over the years I have played mods on many different games and some, for whatever reasons, just don't always work for everybody. I still think that the fact it exists and that people have taken the time to make it in the first place is great anyway. It is just what it is. 

Ah well, I guess I might as well restart RotWK instead lol.

Dear Skallolf,

I am very sorry that you've had an issue with the Shadow of the Past level. I have spoken with our lead campaign tester who has investigated this bug. All we can conclude is that you are moving the heroes before they have finished capturing the flag. I appreciate its very hard/impossible to tell when the flag has been taken as there's no rising 'Good' flag. The only indication is if your hero is still doing their celebrate animation then they are still capturing it. There is one flag on the left hand-side we've found Aragorn is unable to capture due to pathfinding issues, and I will look into fixing this. We are also going to see if we can get the invisible flags to display something - this is a vanilla BFME bug.

I appreciate you are more than fed up with this level, certainly myself and the lead campaign tester have played it more times than I'd like to recall! If you do want to carry on with it I would be happy to provide you with instructions for skipping the level? Just PM me either here or on the Discord and I can try to help.

Thanks again though for taking the time to give a full and detailed bug report, it does help me so much with identifying areas where we need to look into things a bit more.
