Classic Rock
Gothic Rock (if I absolutely must use the term...)
Symphonic Metal
Symphonic Rock
Sk8-Rock (I guess it has to be given a title )
I'm very choosy about bands, but this is where most of them will fit.

I don't class artists under styles as I don't see a need to limit myself based on a simple label which is ultimately pointless. Look at the artist Soilwork, if you listen to their albums chronologically they go from Melodic Death Metal to practically rock. How do you place a genre or label on an artist which doesn't conform to any given style?
For myself, I listen to any band which catches my eye. My current favourite band - Emery - I only listened to because of the fact it had my tutor's name for a band name. So I thought it'd be interesting to see what type of music a band sharing the name of my Maths teacher would be.

2) Industrial
3) Synthpop (think Depeche Mode)
4) Indie Rock (also put bands like Kaiser Chiefs in this)
5) Art Rock (basically progressive rock, but I just like the term )

1) Art Rock (example)
2) Indie Rock
3) Alt Rock
4) Tuneless Rock (Rock that proves you don't need to be in tune with anyone else, or even yourself)
5) Other Rock (Ha! Take that, style nazi's!)
I can cram most of what I listen to into such vague catagories...

And yes, what Holly said is the main reason we need the genres is so we can all work out other bands of a similar style that we may find likeable. If I can't stand anything hardcore/trance (and, by and large, I can't), it allows me to rule out a shitload of bands I know I'll hate. Since you can't immediately tell from a band's name what style it plays, easier to put it into a box alongside similar artists.
