Decoys are cheap, unarmed units who are often used to destract emenies while the main taskforce goes on a strike... its really easy to make one... here is a tutorial...

1. Add ##=DECOY to the InfantryTypes list
2. Create the art entries for DECOY - just duplicate an existing one (such as [CONS], rename it to [DECOY], Add Image=CONS and add a cameo with the conscipt's base image and the text as DECOY
3. Now Add the following codes to the rules file...

The Unit....
; Robotic Decoy Conscript 
[DECOY]
UIName=Name:E2;the only flow in this unit - all players see this as Conscript (even the owner) so, change this to Decoy if you want...
Name=Decoy
Category=Soldier
Primary=FakeGun;just a dummy weapon to make sure that the enemy thinks he's a threat
;-----------if you have copied the conscript in your rules file, the remember to remove the deploy part-------
Prerequisite=NAHAND

.......Thats it.. your decoy robot or whatever you wanna call it, is ready...
The same way, you can make decoys of tanks, aircraft, and naval units too (just make sure that you DRASTICALLY reduce the strength when making decoys of armored units (just to be on this world) after all, they are like toys, arn't they??? ... your choice...

what about giving the decoy the spy disguising weapion?... so the unit would look like he wants (ally or enemy units) and wouldn't have the string problem :p

@mig eater: if everyone knows that, then how come i have never seen such units in any of the mods around here...

Because they are useless. Basic infantry, Dogs or even the cheapest tanks are all decoy cannon fodder units...

pointless idea

decoys would only work if there was a tag which forced enemy units to fire on it when mixed among say real units

also conscripts/dogs so damn cheap, i wouldn't need a shitty decoy in the first place.

actually.....
they can be made more dangerous on the enemy's view by increasing the threatposed value...

and considering the spy thing, that would work like perfect, considering that the unit doesn't have the ability to pick up desguises...

conscripts and dogs are cheap, but the ai knows that they are a lot weaker than say, tesla troopers, so they strike the tesla troopers first... if there is a decoy of a unit that the ai considers is stronger than the tesla guy, than the ai would leave the tesla guy alone and concentrate on the decoy.... makes sense?

it would be better as an ability than a purchasable unit... but ra2/yr doesn't have such opitions... like a speacial forces unit that can create decoys of all friendly units in his range... although that can be done in Rise Of Nations... and could be a greate feature in ra2, a patch such as NPatch implements it... O_o

Problem with decoy tanks, buildings or infantry, be them spy-like or just using a normal unit's art (and strings). Highlight said unit, hit 'y' thrice. See the value in dollars for the unit? You can do that to any single enemy unit. If it weren't for the attack cursor, that would actually be about the only reliable way to see if anything was not what it appeared to be.

How about a dummy unit initially veteran, using the NewUpgradeSystem to promote into the Decoy, which wil have the same cost as what it is trying to copy?

If anyone of you have played Rise Of Nations, then you would know that the Special Forces units (upgraded from scouts) can create decoys of all friendly units in a certain range them as a special ability, providing that he has enough craft for that... that is a perfect decoy case... if that could be implemented into YR, then Walla... but, such special abilities don't even exist in YR...

Well you have problems there with the fact that your decoy could only be one specific unit, an enemy destroying it would gain the same veterancy as the full priced unit for taking it out, and if it disguised you'd have to contend with the fact that the vet pip would overlay the art like it always does.

Really, it gets so convoluted in coding and narrow in functionality that it's really not worth the effort.

eh,lone wolf i also play RoN and mostly the enemy attacks only existing units and if attacks an decoy even the decoy has a little bit of armor
and the ability appears at generals or patriots
