i've decided to help with the Battle for Narnia mod but i don't know what sotfware to use or where to get it could you guys help me out?

For skinning you'd need something like Photoshop - But since that's a bit expensive, it would probably be better to go for GIMP http://www.gimp.org/ which is free :p

For modelling, a 3d modelling program such as 3ds max is needed... 3ds max is the best to use, but just get RenX if you can't get 3ds max ;) - Renegade tools has RenX in it (as well as a w3d viewer)

On the main site (http://www.the3rdage.net) there is an Article (I think, could be a download) called Tools of the Trade. That has links to a few things.

With regards to gmax and renx, check out Flameguard's tutorials on how to set them up on the main site too.
