I never liked the formation that the current spearmen/pikemen/phalanx guys have, id like to see a regular phalanx formation like in Rome Total war. That way they would concentrate their spears in front, but they would be more vulnerable from the back. I also thinks these units shouldn't be so weak against normal infantry, but i guess that's a balancing issue.

PS.: I guess shields on most of spear units would be a nice plus too, but i guess i'm asking for way too much.

I think that in addition to their porcupine formation would be great Good post, as this would definitely add a more realstic feel.

i think while some pikemen have porcupine formation, the ones with shields (like gondor spearmen) could do that formation

I think the porcupine wastes way too many spears in the back of the formation, may be you can include both of them with downsides and advantages for each one

like I said... but yeah the porcupine is good if surrounded, like in gladiator, when their fending off the chariots, whilst the other line formation would allow them to hold together and be vastly more effective against those in front of them.

I've thought along these lines for ever... (so I like the idea) , it's just that I wouldn't know how to code it. I'm pretty sure Sûl could though...
