Iirc, I believe it was noted on this board somewhere that when you dig into canon, you see that the TIE Fighter is a technological marvel in that it's so dirt-cheap compared to all the preceding stuff.
Yes - the original Republic TIE: $540 (speed 80; maneuver 90)
Eta-2 Actis Interceptor: $1740 (speed 140; maneuver 125)
Alpha-3 Nimbus V-Wing:: $615 (speed 135; maneuver 75)
Delta-7 Aethersprite: $1080 (speed 100 maneuver 90)
The TIE series took ideas from both the Eta-2 and the V-Wing and I think Sienar bought the rights to the Delta line for research purposes.
Now look at the TIE Starfighter:
The flight performance is a next generation from the above designs : (speed 90 Maneuver 100), but Imperial engineers have managed to get the production cost down to a mere $360.
And the TIE Fighter adds more speed and Power to Weapons as well!
Now that's impressive development work!
