As you might know, I really like the goblin models Lauri made for SEE. We now have Goblin Swordsmen, Spearmen (combined), Pikemen, Archers and Drummes. They all use the same cool models, with LUA for variety in gear/details. But there was something I wasn't fully content with - my old Beta 4.5 skins... So I decided to make new ones, based on some really great Weta prop shots :)

That's a masterpiece ! so , you want to include spearmen with the regulat warriors ? good idea , a bit like gorgoroth orcs , aren't they ? both of you , and your team , are gods ! If I can help for ideas to SEE , I'll do it :)

Hehe thanks... but we're not "gods" for sure ;p We're just a few dudes really nerdy about Lord of the Rings, and some of us are really talented. Mostly the modelers and the heavy coders in my opinion :) Don't need that much ides though, we got plenty of those, hehe. Thanks though, and enjoy =)

When you said " spearmen combiend " you mean what ? that there are spearmen AND pikemen ? or spearmen are combined with warriors ?
It's stil a masterpiece , no doubt about it ; I'm also a fan of LOTR and Arda in general , hehe :) . I acknowledge that those goblins are very close to those seen in movies , like your uruks and orcs ( the others too , of course ! ) but I wish you the best for the next beta .

The texture is a good start, but I think there are several things you can do to make it a lot better.

For one, look at the mapping on the model to prevent the many stretched parts (knees, shoulders) and add some shading where metal overlaps, especially on the bracers. Also on the bracers and the shoulders, the resolution of the texture there is too small, especially compared to the crisp quality of the armour on the Goblin's back.

I know the pictures you used (I used them as well at some point, many years ago) and the lighting on them is pretty terrible. What I did was manipulate those pictures to be more dark and gritty, desaturate the brightness of the rust, and get rid of the blue teint that pervades throughout the pictures.

Also, the difference in resolution between the mail and the plate is pretty obvious, you may want to find some picture of chainmail and manipulate that to look more dark and rotten and replace the current (EA?) mail with that.

All in all this shouldn't take more than an hour or so.

No fuel left for the pilgrims

UPDATE: this unit will replace the current Pikemen, since they use Uruk-amins and just not look goblin-ish enough :thumbsupsmiley:

Oooh that is nice! Matias has some good points. Im sure Naz'll put a little more spit shine on em.

So if I understand you right these will replace the older pikeman model the goblins have? will they still use the uruk anims? Also have you considered using both this new model and the old one? And my last thought for the day - Would it be possible to have the goblin hordes be less organized? They have too much "standing army" going on. Yes IM a pain in the @ss!!! : D

Not at all, those are all good points and in line with SEE's agenda - "realism". As is my point about the current Pikemen. They don't stand a chance against this new model (spearmen), due to the follwing reasons:

1) Spearmen use LUA (scripts) to randomize gear, just like the swordsmen, whilst Pikemen all look the same and tey'd had to be model edited in order to get LUA gear, which I'm not keen on due to #2.

2) Spearmen use new (custom?) anims donated from Lauri. I don't know where they come from, since they're not in BFME1 or 2. I doubt someone made them, as they look motion captured just like the others, but they are new indeed. This makes the spearmen feel really unique, and most of all - they move like goblins and not uruks. The pikemen use uruk animations.

The only downside to this is that they lack porcupine formation, but since I dont want hordes acting like mirrors of other similar hordes in other races, I'm fine with that. They can still have great bonuses against cavalry and monsters like pikemen do... The horde linup is actually tweaked a lot (by Sûl) long time ago but I might make them even more scattered :tongevil: And no, they will not be combined with the pikemen, they will replace them, so isengard can keep those anims for the uruks alone.

Thanks for the confidence :p
I modified the regular Goblin swordsmen anims to wield spears, that's why they look familiar, look motion captured, and aren't in BFME1 or 2.

Damn!? That's awesome work indeed! :xcahik_: I thought someone got a hold of EA leftovers that was never used. I wouldnt have guessed someone edited them by themselves. Cool! The only downside is that they lack some things, like attention anims and more noticably wall scaling, which makes the combined hordes impossible since I wanna keep the main gobbo hordes scale walls =) But it's ok, cause I used them to replace the uruk-animated (and non LUA) Pikemen from TDP and that really unified the horde's look.

BTW, the lost porcupine formation is compensated by the fact that the Hobgoblins (ex "Marauders") still got it, even though they are limited elite unit only =)

I used all the anims from goblins in BFME1. They were creeps back then, quite a few new anims got back in the game in BFME2 ;)

Thanks, but as you always say that, I always think "All I did was (in the darkness) bind them"
Someone else made the stuff, or took stuff from CaH. So don't give me all the credit ;)
