Going through game.dat I found the following:

%s\%s.tga
%s\%s_art.tga
%s\%s_pic.tga
%s\assetusage.txt
%s\readme.txt

%s = lua for a whitespace I suppose..

Those are C/C++ format strings. The %s means it will be replaced by a string.

\ .tga > automaticly created by the worldbuilder
\ _art.tga > a custom art that will be shown as background of the mini map (if this file cannot be found .tga will be used)
\ _pic.tga > the image that will be shown during the loading screen. (if this file cannot be found a default picture with a question mark appears).
\assetusage.txt > but what might the purpose be...
\readme.txt > I suppose this is to allow the file transfer share the readme too.

readme.txt is transferred between players along with the other files during the map transfer process. Commonly used in C&C3 but not BFME as at that time it was an undocumented feature.

assetusage.txt got generated if DumpAssetUsage=yes was set in the GameData, not sure if it still works in the public release.
