Skybox Format with polar caps and optional ring for Clouds, dust, asteroids or stars etc etc

when making the polar caps, make sure you blur the edges in so it fades in with the texture so use the base as a mask before saving it, minus the cloud ring

I'm confused, can you tell me what you mean by polar caps?

with any rectangle texture it pinches at the and bottom on a sphere, no matter how many polys or how its done simply because 3D mesh are triangles and this results in pinching
the way around this was to commonly have a cube with a sphere texture rendered over it like your traditional fps sky-boxes, now unless you have some brilliant tool, making a seamless and unwarped skybox is really difficult
and some times unnessasary, many games employ a "cap" that covers the pinching and it blends in seemlessly

heh also works for mud, i wanted a color that would be below "earth" level and go to near black as a base, this is no means a skybox but a template for people to colour and fill in as they see fit

EDIT: its also the same gradient that should be used for chromatic/shiny things, the gradient is a modified version of that classic 1970's chrome effect and is kind of iconic in a respect
