Being added with Beta 0.1 is the new Custom game modes option.

The custom game mode option allows you to play a custom game mode (I'll abbreviate it to CGM from here on) which acts like a modular mod of LWR.

This could be something as simple as rebalancing or more complex it's up to you.

How to play Custom game modes:

Running a CGM is easy take your new .big file for the CGM and name it custom1.big, custom2.big or custom3.big then simply move it to the "My Battle for Middle-Earth Files" folder where most mods are installed.

You can have up to 3 CGM big files stored and run via the launcher.

Next you run the launcher and select the game mode code option and type in either custom1, custom2 or custom3 matching the file you set up before.

The game will now launch the CGM on top of LWR.

Making a Custom Game mode:

Making a custom game mode is just like making any mod except instead of the regular game serving as your base you have the LWR code to work from.

You can find tutorials to get you started over in the articles section of http://www.the3rdage.net/

Extract the lwrpublic.big file and use that as your base code for CGM and save it inside your CGM big file (custom1.big etc)

You can store your extra textures and so on inside this big file as well instead of adding to the ones there.

You may need to update your CGM to keep up to date with LWR changes so keep an eye on my patches and change lists.

It is recommended to keep the changes to a minimum to reduce the amount of work needed to update with each patch.

If you have code problems do not post them in the LW forums, Facebook, PM or Moddb pages post them in the BFME Modding section and make sure you mention it's for LWR/CGM.

The easiest way is to add CGM to the thread title.

Adding the other factions:

While some of the other factions are playable they are not complete so I'd highly recommend not making a CGM adding these factions.

I may also be spiteful and just add killswitch codes to the factions.  :glare:

Subhosting Custom Game Modes:

I'm interested to see what people can make with LWR as a base so if you have an interesting CGM let me know, I'll try it out and if I like it I might add it to the official game modes list with it's own game mode code and distribute it with future releases (credit given of course).

I'm also looking to subhost CGMs right here on these forums so if you have a CGM you want to share post in the subhost topic with a link and I'll add it to an index of game modes for people to download.

There are some rules and suggestions to this however:

  • The CGM can not have another mod's assets with out permission ie I won't host mods with TDH assets without permission from the creators and permission will have to be confirmed so they'll have to tell me personally.
  • The CGM must be stable ie not crash and not overly buggy.
  • The CGM should not add the other LWR factions such as Rivendell before I've released them publicly.
  • Current LWR version - The CGM should be compatible with the latest release, this is so that any changes I've made are carried over so as you're working keep a record of your changes to they can be applied easier.
