Hello everyone! Im back at home from Gamescom and I must admit that, due to the terrible internet connection inside the hotel (free one with 256kb bandwidth or expensive one that did not login most of the times) and the hectic days there made our news update job quite hard. You may notice that other sites that had representants in the event didn't reveal much during the event for the same reasons.

Anyway, I've seen that most of the people here complained about lack of modding and how the monetization strategy from the C&C dev team doesn't fit modding. I wanna start clarifying these issues. Actually Victory Games wants user created content... both maps and mods (or at least modified game modes) and modding itself would actually be positive for their monetization plans. The problem is called DICE, the company who produces the Frostbite engine.

Victory Games has recently announced that there will be a premium plan for the game. Although the standard way to hire it should be through a payment for a fixed time (and then you renew if you want), they did not rule out the possibility of one payment for a lifetime aquisition, like boxed games.

The premium plan should allow you to create custom games and gain experience faster (VP), in order to recruit new Generals. Custom games should allow you to:

- Choose the map

- Choose the colour of your faction.

- Add or remove AI and human players.

- Choose AI's difficulty level. (not enabled in the beta we played)

- Other options should be revealed later.

That sounds pretty much basic, but if you take into account that all other C&C games barely allow you to access the main menu of the game without paying for it, it shouldn't be that bad. If you don't want to pay for it, you can simply choose your general, gamemode and hit 'Play' in order to play.

With that said, it's easy to figure out that custom maps would actually attract premium users, since it would be hard to play it by hoping that the game will choose it for you. The gamemodes or mods would attract more users who would eventually like to customize their experience.

Regarding mods or custom game mods, they would still be interesting if there is no experience collected by playing them, although we have no idea how they would implement it, if they do.

The whole problem is that Frostbite engine only loads content that was precompiled with their editor. This is a part of the engine restricted to DICE where Victory Games programmers and software engineers have no access. The engine is unable to read external files and use their content to change ingame content or stats. Implementing such feature is costly and it is not their priority at the moment, because they have not finished the game mechanics yet.

Command & Conquer developpers values the efforts of the modding community since the days of Westwood Studios and they are aware of how it boosted the sales of moddable C&C games. I don't know if the executives above them and investors have the same kind of thought. As far as I've seen CIRE's reaction, they are more interested on user created maps, rather than mods or gamemodes.

And that's all for this post. Expect more coverage of the game both here and at Project Perfect Mod.

Well yea, maps are profitable for everyone.

This reminds me a bit Star Trek Online's Foundry system tho, over there premium users have the Foundry, a custom quest creator and every player has access to the missions done with it. Honestly speaking, over there these Foundry missions added the real Star Trek feeling to me because some missions do feel like a part of the real game, OR being more fitting to theme than Cryptic-made missions.

Mods and alikes would basically be a competition within their own F2P service. modded gamemodes... doubt that would really fit in.

Seems to me like Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 allow users to sell content they make on their marketplace, which seems like a great idea as long as there is some kind of quality control (the custom Dota stuff, including new 'outfits' and things for characters all seem nicely done), Valve also gets a portion of the profit too. This seems like a thing EA would definitely want... an infinite source of new content that requires very little investment from them and yet provides them a source of revenue.

Basic options set as Premium content? That's stupid and a greedy move. What's so special in choosing color and difficulty of AI opponent?

As I have somewhat said, it sounds stupid and greedy, but they want to sell the game. If you don't pay for it, you wont be able to select your custom skirmish options.

If you take into account the other C&C games, you couldn't barely install them if you don't pay for it.

The difference is that this new game seems to be a much better anti-piracy protection.

Money. Money. Money.

EA wants money.

You know, I think it's pretty funny how the small companies like to sound like the good guys, but still work tied to DICE and EA... I mean, if they really do want to do something about it, why not come up with a nice new RTS game via crowd-funding?

Sounds pretty much simple to me. Anyways, someone said that the RTS genre is quite dying.

Maybe the only hope we can still have are the guys behind the Open-Source projects, like OpenRA and 0.A.D.

Well Planetary Annihilation is a massive RTS coming this year which was entirely crowdfunded, so that has been happening. I'm not sure what small companies are tied to EA and DICE and complaining. Victory Games isn't a small company, it's an EA studio.

But from what I've seen, Planetary Annihilation is trying to re-invent RTS... I mean... It's not a classic. Could work really well, but also can fail terrible.

Money. Money. Money.

EA wants money.

That's the objective of any business, although some companies are greedier than others.

EA has spent millions of dollars in this game. They have to cover the costs of keeping a big development team in at least 3 different locations in the world and all their marketing programs for it. Do you really expect them to not get anything in return, specially when there is a huge pressure from investors all around the world for that?

Sorry buddy, but the world is cruel and so does the reality. I trully hope OpenRA becomes successfull anyway.
