For a while now I've been thinking about increasing horde sizes again for Return of Shadow, but I'm not entirely sure so I'm putting it to a vote.

 

Roughly horde sizes would be -

 

Elites and Dunedain - 5 -> 10

Regular units 10 -> 20

Uruks 15 ->30

Orcs 20 -> 40

So just basically doubling all the hordes, could lead to massive battles. I am liking the idea! :D

No. While it would look cooler, you'd only be limiting the amount of hordes by half. There's more depth in setting up your army of 20 hordes than your army of 10 bigger hordes.

There's more depth in setting up your army of 20 hordes than your army of 10 bigger hordes.

Big size battles are more epic than little ones, but maybe they are difficult to balance.

 

Now there are times that the hordes hinder each other and just few soldiers can hit in close combat while all the other ones just wait for some room.

Radspakr can give it a try to see how the hordes moves in the battlefield.

Don't forget that bfme2 also made hordes of 15 men, everything turned out just fine.

Orcs, Goblins: 40

 

Uruks:15, they're fine as they are now. They were rarer than Orcs after all.

 

Regular: 10 to 15.

 

-Men should be 15, both cavalry to infantry,

-Elves and Dwarves should stay as 10 but stronger in order to counter the massive orcish armies.

-Battles during War of the Ring were seldom 2 vs 1 but rather 4 or 5 vs 1, and more (Pelennor Fields) .

 

Elite: 5 to 8 (Dunedain, special hordes....)

 

Monsters, siege engines: 1 (stronger and bigger)

Looking at the fact that Saruman made 10.000 uruks in no time makes me think that they weren't so rare after all :p. I think a horde of 25-30 would do for them. Dwarves are probably as numerous as Men, so there shouldn't be a problem for them to have big battalions.

So it's 8 to 6 in favour.

 

I think I'll go with a smaller increase so I'll add 5 units to each horde instead of doubling.

Command Points will remain as is, (at least for now).

 

Mordor are being tweaked a bit too.

The Mordor Archers are getting 25 just like the Fighters, but the Orc-Archer Combo horde has been removed (it would be 50 strong).
