In light of other topics on the forums regarding players not getting along a few community events would surely help mend some of the problems.

So basically, I was thinking of a community clanwar, everyone who wants to plays opts in, and then randomly gets paired up with a partner(s) to participate in an (official?) clan war? This would no doubt help players interact with each other, and hopefully form some kind of cohesion.

I won't write a massive essay, thats the idea, hopefully people will like it.

So basically a 2vs2 tournament where people get random pairings?

The concept is interesting, but I fear people will simply not show up if they dislike their partner...

So basically yes, we could do some kind of organization - but how exactly should it work? There are quite a few possibilities.

"To know what question we may reasonably propose is in itself a strong evidence of sagacity or intelligence. For if a question be in itself incongruous and begs for uncalled-for answers, it holds, sometimes, besides embarrassing the proposer, the disadvantage to seduce the unguarded listener into giving absurd answers, and we are presented with the ridiculous spectacle of one (as the ancients said) milking the he-goat, and the other holding a sieve beneath."

@mathijs yeah 2v2, and hopefully bigger ones in the future? On the note of not turning up - obviously that is an outcome but there is the possibility that the better players will help their partners(it would be in their best interests?)

@ict yup quite a few, really it depends on whether or not you'll want to do this kind of thing more than once - I guess there are three problems, getting people to sign up, getting people paired into teams and finally recording who wins/loses. My answer to all three would be dependant on whether or not this would be something you guys would be interested in doing more than once.

As for getting people to sign up, it would be possible to advertise the event when bfme loads (and in lobbies?). The second two problems are really one, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to make something that would handle both but for a one off event it would be pretty pointless so using other online resources is probably the best plan of action - for the first time round anyway. After the first time, you can atleast gauge how popular it is.

Overall, what's life without a little risk? People might not sign up, turn up, be nice who knows? I'd like to guess that it would be the opposite though, and people will help others out.

Pairing them into teams/recording wins is easy. We can just do it like we did the previous tournaments (the winning team provides a replay, no replay = no win).

I suppose I would play in this.

I'm slightly worried about the quality of the matches though.

We have people of widely varying skill playing on the server, and randomly assigning teams will probably result in a few very strong and a few very weak teams.

A 5 minute stomp to eliminate the newer players will not not make them feel at home on the server.

Perhaps spliiting the tournament into a newcomer and an experienced division would be an idea?

We can tell signees to describe themselves as noob, med, pro (whatever leet terms the community uses :p ) and then pair them accordingly.

Splitting people into pairs based on experience levels is a great idea, will require some degree of honesty, but should go a long way to solving the problem of games being a total stomp.

Replays will solve the problem of disputed wins, if everything is that simple, the hardest bit will be getting people to sign up?

In the past getting signees was never hard (we've done two tournaments before, with success). The particular format might be tough to sell.

the question is the format organization. Do you want an emulated QM tournament? Happening at a couple of fixed times, where we mix all online players in pairs and everyone has their own ranking points?

ICT's idea of mixing online partners seems pretty fair, organising teams in the lobby or forums, on the fly seems like a pretty arduous task though. My initial thoughts was for a double or triple elimination tournament, gives players enough games to bond, practice etc.

Also part of having set partners was to force interaction, I've played numerous games where people simply do not respond. This would probably be similar if partners were to change as there would be no reason to practice, or help your partner beyond that game.

No matter which way you look at it, each layout will have its advantages and disadvantages. My idea was simply to force some kind of communication between players who wouldn't usually interact with each other.

again, my thoughts are mine, the suggestion was purely as a community based thing with that in mind, I assume you guys are supporting the idea?

Of course we support it. Now we need to further examine the possibilities within your idea.

So the premise is set out? ICT's idea of selecting teams from the list of online players is pretty cool, it poses a few problems though.

What was the layout of the other two tournaments you guys ran? And how was it in terms of people turning up to play at the right time?

Just check out the tournament section we have ;)

As for the game dates: They were free in a given amount of time. Still, not everybody can always participate.

Yep but a format that is favourable for the majority of players would be good, say have a slow tournament and every weekend have an official match? during the week if anyone is on they'll be able 2 practice together?

Okay so I checked the tournament section and one specific paragraph was highlighted for me.

We like to focus on the fun for this tournament. "The important thing is not to win, but to take part".

That means if you lose, you're not in it. For that reason a round robin would be the best option? Every weekend friday to sunday, have an official tournament match?
