Name some acronyms and how you pronounce them, then laugh at each other.

I'll start with some techy ones

GUI: Gooey

SQL: S-Q-L

WYSIWYG: Wissywig

Animated GIF: as in gift

LOL: Lol (by the way, in Dutch "lol" means fun)

Can't think of any commonly used ones right now, but there's a building called WP at my school (no idea what that stands for) and I just call it whoopee.

EDIT: Also, W.I.P. I pronounce 'whip'.

Hohoho. I laugh at you.

Yeah I mispronounce GIF as well. The proper pronunciation is 'jif' (or so its creator says). I say gif or kif (like the Futurama character).

It doesn't matter how the inventor pronounces it only how it's used.

Gif has no official pronunciation.

Eh? How much more 'official' can you get than the creator? :p

No, Rad is right. That is why I pronounce 'Aragorn' like 'hooblarghon'.

I hate it when people pronounce Aragorn like "Aragon"

How do you all pronounce Smaug?

I didn't realize Smaug was an acronym.

Anyway, the correct pronunciation is Smaug as in cow.

Yeah its not an acronym but its often pronounced incorrectly anyway. I tend to say it less like "Smog" and more like "Sm-au-g"

Ah the new young T3A types it takes them a while to ease of the LOTR stuff.

I have an interesting couple for you guys NES/SNES.

I hate the sound of NES being pronounced like "ness" just sounds wrong to me so I always spelt it out.

For SNES I always said Super (Nintendo) although over the years I have adjusted to pronouncing it like it's spelt.

Apparently LOTRO is an acronym I pronounce weird.

Most people I've heard say it like Lo-Tro where I pronounce it like Lo-T(e)ro.

Meh, I'll allow the topic of this thread to diverge :p

Careful. This link is DANGEROUS. Do NOT click it. This one, however, is fine.

I had the meaning of life in my signature, but it exceeded the character limit.
