It doesn't matter how the inventor pronounces it only how it's used.
Gif has no official pronunciation.
If you don't pronounce it like 'jif', you're an asshole. Plain and simple. xD

The things I learn about myself here...
No, but really, pronouncing something differently to someone else should only be a cause for dissent when it causes confusion. I hate it when people nitpick my language, because it's not their damn business.

There are different pronunciations of bagel? I've only heard bay-gull before.

If it makes you feel better you can post everything in IPA from now on, for the sake of passive aggression.

Nitpicking any aspect of language is a douche move. The next person to correct someone else's pronunciation of "bagel," regardless of how weird the other person sounds to them, will get a slap upside the head.
Then don't pronounce things wrong and people won't have to nitpick. xD

What is this new type of punctuation you keep applying?

And who uses 'xD' instead of the dedicated Smiley, ?
Maybe we should use more anti-brony sentiments, or persecute Jeep lovers, simply because we don't like them?
Oh, sorry, are we nitpicking?
Picking up on points where people have a different opinion is fine, but saying they're wrong because you disagree is rubbish.

Pronunciations are listed at the beginning of each book, so I hate it if people get it wrong.
Like s-ow-ron, it's sm-ow-g.

Yes that's what I said SMOG, and isn't Sauron pronounced Sore-on?
I think in battle for middle earth 2 the narator pronounces it Sore-on, I just might have to play that to see how he pronounced it.
Aunt= Ant
That's how I pronounce it, I've heard people say AW-NT and that sounds disgusting
Root=Root
People have pronounced it Rut, that's very incorrect.

No, the films got it right, so try that version. My 'ow' was supposed to be like 'ou' in 'ouch'.
From http://askmiddlearth.tumblr.com/:
According to Tolkien’s description of general pronunciation rules (which you can find in Appendix E of LotR), “au" is pronounced like the vowels in "how" or "loud" (not like in "laud")
