Hey Revora,

I am part of a group that is looking for a hosting for a Unreal Engine 4 based project. It just crossed my mind to use Revora for hosting.

I have a few questions before I submit a request for hosting.

Questions (In No particular order)

  • What is revora's Uptime/Downtime like?
  • Do you guy's offer SVN or GIT Support? If so how much space do you guys offer for Source Control?
  • We do not need a web site upfront but we do need a SVN repo. But we will need a website later down the line. My question is will we be able to get just a private GIT or private SVN repo for our project and a Website with CPanel support later?
  • If it comes down to and I have to pay for more space for the project, Who or what would I go through?

Thank you for your time,

It's complicated to predict. Revora is usually online all the time, but there is a higher chance of giving 503 errors during the backup time, which happens once a day.

Do you guy's offer SVN or GIT Support? If so how much space do you guys offer for Source Control?

Revora offers SVN. Regarding the space usage, it is usually unmettered, but it may take into account these plans if there is any sort of abuse. No GIT support as far as I know.

We do not need a web site upfront but we do need a SVN repo. But we will need a website later down the line. My question is will we be able to get just a private GIT or private SVN repo for our project and a Website with CPanel support later?

I think that it could be possible. Although I have an admin rank, I'm not responsible for hosting here.

If it comes down to and I have to pay for more space for the project, Who or what would I go through?

Do you and your group have any ideas on what you even want to do yet, Clot?

Sounds like something I would say when I don't really have an idea.  But something tells me this might be promising... the UE4 engine is quite exciting.

Interesting, As Banshee is the backup time is what can really mess with people. for me at home in PA it is typically around 12-1 a.m. i know because my personal website is hosted through Revora and when I work consistently on the backend system i work late into the night thus running across the errors etc. Most "civilized" people so to say are not up around the back up times. Pretty sure it does not effect people consistently.

Just my 2 cents :p

Have fun creating your project and i hope to see progress soon.

Do it! Blow our minds! I will be very much happy to donate to a project with true potential. Especially one based on the new engine(s).

Forget SVN, that's a thing of the past. We can offer you git hosting through Atlassian Stash, which is like a private GitHub or BitBucket with detailed permissions, pull requests, code comments, etc. I'd have to configure that first for your team though as currently we only use it for Revora projects.

As for the website, I could just give you the cPanel account now. You can always place some filler page there or leave it empty in the beginning. Be aware though that you'll have to place our network bar and ads on your site once it's up. In turn, you also get linked to in the network bar.

Hey Phil thanks for your detailed reply :)

Linking the network bar will be no problem - I have discussed this with other members of the team and that should be fine. :)

Now forgive me - I am not very knowledgeable about git so I need to ask a few questions.

* Does Git/Stash handle large binary based files well? I always thought that Git was for code.

* Is there anyway to get rid of ads either by donating to revora monthly or some other way?

* Is git lighter than Subversion? Just curious :)

Thank you for your time,

Ben

Does Git/Stash handle large binary based files well? I always thought that Git was for code.

Git used to have some problems with binary files in its early versions. Nowadays this is not an issue any more because the way content is saved on disk is vastly improved. What you will find with git is that the initial clone operation might take just a little big longer than Subversion because you copy the entire history and not just a revision. But after that everything is absolutely blazingly fast because it happens locally.

Is git lighter than Subversion? Just curious :)

Absolutely. Branching, checking out, resetting, etc. is so fast and easy that you'll often find yourself just creating a branch as a playground to test some features. Commit a few times, see if you like it and throw it away if not.

Seriously, git is definitely the way to go nowadays, especially for large projects. Some additional reading:

Yes you can just make a monthly payment of €5 instead.

So question - When can we start uploading our files to the Git Repo?

So Just a heads up we no longer need a repo here on revora. We will be using bitbucket. We just need to get things up and running ASAP.

However we do still need a website so we need cPanel access :)

Okay. Just be aware that BitBucket's free tier has a 5 user limit. Should you want to use our Stash instance later on you can move the project very easily.

I can set up the cPanel account now.
