1. Is there a fortress on the island, ruined or otherwise?
2. Are there bridges connecting the island to the mainland?

1. It was fortified. So any defenses would be relatively modest imo.
2. "The waters of the Anduin broke with white foam on the sharp rocks."--According to the Thain's Book, which is probably the most reliable source for looking up stuff related to the Tolkien universe. So it is reasonable to assume that it did not have a bridge.

1.) The fortress of Cair Andros was moderately fortified until it's fall during the War of the Ring, which was a few days before the siege of Minas Tirith. Maybe do a before and after map .
2.) It wasn't made to clear.

With no bridges then it's safe to assume that the river should be crossable by units using fords? From what I read, it seems the river is suitable for crossing there because it isn't as wide or deep.

Yeah I really don't think it has a bridge, considering it was an island deemed of strategic value by Gondor. So, it must have been a point in the river suitable for crossing.
