I don't clearly recall us ever planning out an art'sy contest of any sort, but I think it would be a wonderful place to have some good competition in graphic design.  So let's do it.

I want to hold the first annual Revorian Art Duel (name pending?) where a slew of members battle in a cunning gauntlet of art, design, and form to create stunning works of art.  The way I plan this competition to be held is that everyone is given an interesting subject, and must work upon the theme given to them.  And the community as a whole will vote on the submitted pieces in the end, using state-of-the-art Revorian voting technology.

But I also may be able to work out a money prize.  It depends on if we can get lots of people attending this competition.  So for this topic, I would like to see who is interested in participating.  There is no limit to the size or style of the piece, as long as it is a 2D image.  All pieces must be original work, in the sense of the images made must 100% be the work of the contestant and not from any other source (such as taking images from Google and editing them into your work).  And also, if the piece can be debated as not following the theme given, it may also be disqualified.  But that's about it.  So yea, let me know if you're interested, and I can get to work organizing it.

I am interested in being a contestant. =D

Unfortunately, I cannot support any prize. =(

I mean that I'm sorry that I cannot donate to support a prize draw because I have no money. =p

I'm interested, but I think the 'you can't take anything from Google' rule is nonsense. Obviously it's bad form to just steal and submit someone else's work, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to use an occasional stock image to create something new. Just about every digital artist does this.

Maybe that could be one of the special requirements of the contest?

Being someone who used to use images to take shortcuts in image creation, I have come to conclude that it's a bit tosh to do.  Especially in a contest.  I suppose there's nothing wrong with taking an image and making some sort of... erm... stuff around it, if the image in question is using a particular style or is a piece of high renown, and your own custom art somehow uses said style or iconic image in a... way.  I dunno what I'm trying to say.  Just make your own piece and don't rely on someone else's work is all the rule implies.  But if someone doesn't know how to make a hand, and they just rip one from a random human model, then I guess it really can't be prevented anyway.  So do whatever, but just don't make it obvious.

It could be possible to ask for the original stock image(s) to verify the artists self-contributed-art-ish creativity?

"To know what question we may reasonably propose is in itself a strong evidence of sagacity or intelligence. For if a question be in itself incongruous and begs for uncalled-for answers, it holds, sometimes, besides embarrassing the proposer, the disadvantage to seduce the unguarded listener into giving absurd answers, and we are presented with the ridiculous spectacle of one (as the ancients said) milking the he-goat, and the other holding a sieve beneath."

That sentence confused me a little.  But no, it should be fine.  If a contestant needs to "borrow" images, then I don't have a problem with it.  Well, I sort of do.  But it's very hard to detect, but it's also equally hard to contest with work that is fully developed by an individual that doesn't rely on borrowing images.

No no, that's not what I mean.

I mean that it's common practice for many digital artists to use stock photos of, for example, a cliff face, and incorporate it into their larger image. It's also quite common for contemporary artists to create art based on older stuff and incorporate elements of other people's work (postmodern stuff, pop art, etc).

The whole 'everything has to be 100% original' shtick hasn't been in vogue for about a 100 years now. :p That's what I'm getting at. Having a rule that says you can't use any other sources but your own is too restrictive for what I read was a pretty free-form visual art contest.

Anyway, I'm sure there won't be any cheaters here, and if there are, they'll be easily found out. Our collective Google-fu is strong. What'll the theme be?

Oh.  Yea, you can use like actual photos and draw dead children pouring off it like a river, or whatever.  Yea.  That I don't have a problem with that sort of use of Google at all.

I'll do a randomized theme here during the weekend.  But I just want to figure out who is interested in participating right now.  The way I'll randomize it is randomly choose a category like 'architecture', 'character design', or something like those sorts.  Then I may use a random word generator and get a fairly diverse yet interesting theme word.  So we may end up having to do "Mustered Architecture," or something nuts like that.    While we decide if we want to participate or not, you can also give me ideas for the randomizer.

Now that's a way to get a theme.

Yeah, I'm in.

for about a 100 years now.

Pffft, a little longer than that methinks. I'll be honest and say I don't think it'll take off with the non-regulars, but why not, eh?  I may also be able to monetarily contribute by borrowing from the reserve someone here who owes me.

No, no, no... I had to deal with an hour long lecture on that crap today.  But let's see, we have about 4 people interested.  Me included, I guess.  We can probably get Panda in this as well.  But I think we can get quite a few strangers in here.  Phil was interested in funding tournament prizes quite a long time ago, so I'll talk to him about doing a similar thing with this.  The big difference is, that this is actually a manageable contest.  We'll get a prize ready, and simply advertising an art contest with a real money prize will get loads of people interested.

Perhaps a process diary? =D

That would make sure that the entrants have original content.

Alright, since we're not actually giving away prizes right now, let's just do this.  I was going to pick "architecture, character design, abstract, ect" crap like that, but I'll let you do whatever you want.  AS LONG AS IT FITS THE CHOSEN WORD OF WIN.

What is word chosen word of win for this contest?  The random word generator has spoke.  The theme for this contest is:

Bottle

What could this mysterious word mean?  Well, you have plenty of time to figure that out. This contest will end September 22nd, and all submissions will be judged by your fellow Revorians.
