Hm... this is indeed an odd file... I can't seem to import it either...
Possibly some older version of w3d I guess which the importer can't handle...
Neither the BFME 2 or BFME 1 version imports here, I could look into using another program to "save" the 3d render scene to a max file and give you that?

If that's useable, then I'd really appreciate it.

Hm.. odd the program I usually use to do that is not working -.-'
Well the reason it won't import, I think, is because there is an animation inside the model as well, not sure if the w3d importer supports that

Try using this W3D-Importer for 3DS Max: http://modding-union...3d_importer.zip
I know it has some advanced functionality that might cause the crash (didn't test it though^^)

This error is rather odd - my importer processed the model literally in one gulp.
Just in case, here's the version I'm using.
By the way, Mathijs, what is the project going to be about (if it's not a secret)?

I'm offering another... fist... bump... (ugh what was I thinking) for whoever can get me nice max files (8 compatible) of the RotWK troll CaH models. They crash every time I open them.
chtl_st_u_skn
chtl_ht_u_skn
Or similar.

I got one open in max. How do you want it sent to you?

Saved as a max file, rarred, and uploaded here. If that doesn't work, you can rar it and send it to me on Facebook. Thanks!

I can't save it without it corrupting. =/
Drat, and I even tried with the Blender importer too.
In 3ds Max 8 it loads up with auto-bind and everything I suppose it needs. But doesn't save properly.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu yes!
Fing materials. =D I got the tricksy thing to work by applying 3ds Max 8 standard materials. That might help with other issues I've been having. I'll send it via Facebook.

What about exporting it to w3d or .3ds?
You can also try to remove the spacewarp/bones so you are left with the mesh only. I have seen that solve issues before. All I need is the mesh to look at.

By replacing all the materials loaded in by the importer with the default 3DS Max 8 material I was able to save the file in .max format successfully. Initial attempts, without editing what was imported before save, corrupted the save file.
Here are both on my OneDrive (in the folder Vanilla models).
