You can actually have "HD" videos on youtube. (That is what youtube calls HD, actually around 1024x576)

All you have to do is scaling the video up to 1280x720 (and possibly add black borders left and right due to widescreen) and youtube will res is down to its HD again. There will be a minor quality loss, but it will still look fantastic in respect to most other youtube videos.
