Red Alert 2 was released on the 23rd of October, 2000 (Less than 11 months before 911). That's Yuri's Revenge you're thinking of...

I'm suffering the same thing as well, several coop and challenge maps cannot be opened cause the editor crashes. I even turned off the building outline option and it still doesn't work.
Maybe some patch has to be made to the map editor?

The Virus was not in the PsiCorps arsenal that early, it belonged to the Scorpion Cell. His death was just from poisoning by Yuri iirc.
Maybe a coop mission where you poison the water supply that Boris drinks?

It would've been funny had they planned a Easter egg sequence where Yuri's like "No! Proselyte! You're not following my orders!" then the ground begins to shake suddenly. Every unit dies on the map, Yuri's like "You've messed with the natural script!" then everything goes white like that one episode of Billy & Mandy
