the icon thing is a known bug for older systems, it cant be helped
As for the crashing, it doesn't crash on mine, but it does crash on others, im working with some people to try and sort it out but its not easy

You need to have the .bat in the same folder as swfoc.exe and the text in the bat needs to be like this
swfoc MODPATH=Mods\ScifiatwarMod
so all u do is create ur own mod, in the mods folder, call that faolder MYMOD and then put the data folder in there, then the bat will look like this
swfoc MODPATH=Mods\MYMOD
just swap out MYMOD with ur mod name
