I'm a few months late, lol, but as far as I know, pikemen counter beasts like trolls or mumakii. Trolls can be good against certain heroes, are somewhat OK against archers, very good against buildings, and extremely good against swordsmen. They are basicalyl very mobile siege units, and can also give you bonuses (the drummers) and so on. Also they're super cool!

Have you got 1.09 for bfme2? That's the one I'm playing! Also I started now again after years lol :))
