July 29th of this year is the day of release. So who's opting in to upgrade to Windows 10 for free (if you are on Win7 and Win8)? The free upgrade for consumers will last a year.

As for me, I rather get the full version OEM anyway with a cost.

After reading some recent articles, looks like Win10 is a bang into the dirt on features, mostly Internet related. Some features from Win7 have disappeared and most Win8 features were crap except the remodelled File Explorer and Task Manager that should be in Win7. And I'll bet Win10 will be the last Windows OS to support 32-bit platforms.

I will be converting to try it out. I'm growing tired of windows 7 and windows 10 looks like a good enough reason to try and modernize.

I'm getting it, based on Windows 7 becoming obsolete.  Games will just stop working for it, so I might as well ditch it now.  As long as it's not some fresh touch screen hell, like Window's 8, then it can't be that bad.

I'm getting it because everything running 8.1 gets a free upgrade.

Might have to build a new pc this fall to jump over. this one is getting close to four years old now. But I've no clue if it'll be any good or not.

Umm... you shouldn't have access to it yet.  Are you sure you didn't just do the "pre register" thing?

I use Insider Preview, as @Plokite_Wolf said, that option was enabled about half year ago. When W10 will be finally relased i can install "full" version then.

Everyone with Windows 8 has easy access to it, Pas. In the form of a taskbar icon that needs to be clicked for the upgrade to happen.

Windows 7 has that too, but neither gives automatic tech preview access :p

I don't know, does the upgrade remove all existing apps? If so I'm sure I won't do it anytime soon as I don't have time to re-install all my work applications etc. It will take me like 2 weeks.

I don't believe so.  It may wipe your task bar... then again, maybe not.

One of the things in Windows 10 that lacks an old feature is the Advanced Appearance settings that was in Windows 7 and older versions. Instead Microsoft did something that only increases the text size (depending on resolution) and not changing all other appearance settings.... which I don't like.

Yes I'll update, however I really want to know if these programs will work:

  • The Battle for Middle-earth series (I, II, RotWK and their respective Worldbuilders and modding tools)
  • my LEGO Media games (from early 2000s)
  • Autodesk 3DS Max 8

Also, I am concerned about the amount of money I will have to pay. Windows 10 might be free, however, will I still have Microsoft Office 2007 or will that disappear in the update?

If worse comes to worse I still have my Windows 7 disk. =p

Er... don't you have a disc for that?

Also, to be honest, the chances are that most programs will still work.

C&C 3 Kane's Wrath seems to work in the tech previews. Since the engine is mostly shared, you shouldn't have many issues.
