This is a poor first attempt at human modelling.

It is supposed to be the thief from Seiken densetsu 3. I got the proportions for the model from EA's Legolas model.

I took the head from the tutorial model that I did (3D Max low poly character tutorial).

I tried to keep it simple, but even then I was struggling!

Any thoughts?

It looks fantastic! ;D

I wonder who it is supposed to be?

It is supposed to be Hawk, the thief character from an old Super Famicom RPG. The issue is that it does not really look like the character at all!

I agree with Matt, I think it looks excellent for a first attempt!

If that's a poor first attempt, then I would hate to see what you can do with practice.  By hate, I do mean I LOVE IT... MAKE MORE.

So I tried to follow the excellent texturing tutorial that is on this site... and failed miserably!

My texture is remarkably bland and cartoonish (to be fair all the references of the character are cartoons, but that does not excuse the blandness).

I especially had trouble with any areas that involved skin. The face is terrible, the arms are terrible, the actual skin looks plastic.

I will have to hope that I will improve with further attempts and tutorials. For me this is very complicated stuff. I tried looking at actual clothes folds, and also looked up arm anatomy. Apart from my lack of artistic skill, I believe that my unwrap did not do me favours in that regard. Also when I next do a human model, I will definitely have six sided arms instead of the 5 sided arms that I imitated from BFME.

Lastly the knife is also really rubbish. I made it far too simple, the actual design that I was supposed to follow is quite interesting, but I did not want to give myself too much modelling and unwrapping work, so I over simplified it.

The next step that I want to do is to rig this, so I can see how it looks in game. I was thinking of using the Legolas skeleton (due to the knife fighter animations). Do you think that Legolas has the best animations for a duel knife wielder?

Thanks for any advice, help, or comments!

Let me tell you that you are absolutely on the right track. Don't be afraid to use picture references for your texture work, and keep at it. You will improve quickly. Your first attempt is considerably better than most, myself included.

Thanks for your words!

I followed a rigging tutorial. I was expecting better  results, although to be honest I think that perhaps my expectations were too high.

Rigging infantry is a lot simpler in C&C3.

Next I will try to do a very simple attack animation.

My first model looked like a potato (and it was a potato). After i made a few prison bars then i ragequitted, because i couldnt get it right in game. So as those guys said, you have great potential in modeling. really nice model.

@ about texture, you need to add more shadows and highlights using burn/dodge tool.
